Icelandair connects Canada with Iceland and offers onward travel to Europe through Keflavík. Whether it suits your trip depends on the full fare, connection time and any plans to spend a few nights in Iceland.
This guide was checked on October 28, 2026. Schedules, fares and program rules can change. Compare a cash ticket, Saga Points and any partner award availability as separate ways to book.
Flying Icelandair from Canada through Keflavík
Icelandair’s Canadian website markets departures including Toronto and Vancouver to Reykjavík. Check the dates and operating carrier on each segment. A city in a booking engine does not prove that a route is nonstop or operates year-round.
International flights use Keflavík, airport code KEF. This is different from Reykjavík’s domestic airport, RKV. A domestic connection can require ground transportation between airports, so read the airport codes before choosing a short connection.
For Europe, compare the Iceland itinerary with a nonstop flight and with our TAP Air Portugal guide. A lower headline fare may involve baggage charges or a later arrival.
Cabins: Economy and Saga Premium
Icelandair offers Economy and Saga Premium with different fare conditions. “Flex” describes ticket flexibility and related inclusions; it does not, by itself, identify a separate cabin.
The official Icelandair fleet page lists several aircraft families, including Boeing 737 MAX, 757 and 767 aircraft and Airbus A321LRs introduced from December 2024. Layouts, space and equipment vary. Look at your flight’s seat map and the advertised seat features before paying for an upgrade.
For an overnight trip, compare departure time, flight duration and the seat itself. A premium cabin should not be assumed to offer the same rest as another airline’s Business Class. An exterior aircraft photo does not identify its interior.
Fares, baggage and lounge access
The Canadian fare conditions distinguish Economy Light, Standard and Flex. Light excludes checked baggage; Standard includes one 23 kg checked bag. Check seat selection and change conditions as well.
Saga Premium includes one 32 kg checked bag, while Saga Premium Flex includes two. For Saga Premium tickets bought after April 1, 2025, the included lounge is at Keflavík. Saga Premium Flex has separate lounge access rules, subject to the airports served. Do not apply Flex benefits to the regular Premium fare.
Add your required seats, meals and bags to the total. For travel involving another operating carrier, read the conditions for each segment. Credit card lounge access must also be checked separately for the network, terminal, hours and visit allowance.
Stopovers: budget for time in Iceland
Icelandair’s Stopover offer lets travellers add a stay in Iceland to eligible transatlantic journeys without additional base airfare. The permitted duration depends on the fare; check the allowance displayed during booking, especially for Light and Flex tickets.
Hotels, ground transportation, rental cars and activities still cost extra. Compare the actual total for your dates. No additional airfare does not mean a free holiday or identical prices on every departure.
If booking with a partner’s points, read that program’s itinerary rules. Icelandair’s commercial stopover offer does not automatically apply to an Atmos Rewards award. Our TAP guide provides another extended-stopover option to compare.
Saga Points and Atmos Rewards are separate options
Icelandair Saga Points can reduce the cost of an Icelandair booking. Compare the cash price with the points required and the remaining payment instead of assuming a fixed redemption value.
Atmos Rewards provides a different route. Alaska Airlines’ official Icelandair partner page confirms that Icelandair awards can be booked with Atmos points online through Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines. Partner award inventory can differ from Icelandair’s cash availability.
Icelandair is not a oneworld member. Its partnership does not extend every alliance benefit to its flights. Confirm an available award, transfer timing, taxes and fees before moving points into any program.
Canadian credit cards for an Icelandair cash fare
Scotia Gold: Scene+ for an eligible travel purchase
The Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card earns Scene+ points. Issuer conditions allow points to be applied to eligible travel purchases charged to the account, including bookings made outside Scene+ Travel.
Read the Scotia Gold card terms for purchase eligibility and the redemption window. This offsets a card purchase; it is not a transfer into Saga Club or Atmos Rewards. You are choosing from cash fares rather than partner award inventory.
Cobalt: compare a purchase credit with other redemptions
The American Express Cobalt® Card earns Membership Rewards points. American Express Use Points for Purchases can provide an account credit against certain eligible posted transactions.
This does not create Saga or Atmos points. Compare the value displayed in your account with other Membership Rewards uses, along with the card’s fee and conditions. A welcome offer only helps if you qualify and can meet its spending requirements within your regular budget.
The offers shown above use the cards’ current records. See our best credit cards in Canada and Milesopedia newsletter for other options.
Buying points: match the purchase to the booking
Saga Club’s membership conditions provide for points purchases and transfers under the account rules and applicable fees. Obtain a current quote before topping up.
For an Icelandair partner award, Alaska directs members to buy Atmos Rewards points. First confirm that the required flight is available through that program. Saga Points cannot be treated as an Atmos balance.
Include the price of the missing points, taxes, fees and any stopover expenses, then compare with the cash fare and cancellation terms. A points sale does not guarantee that an award seat will remain available while the purchase is processed.
