Azores Airlines connects Canada with the Azores and markets travel from Toronto and Montréal. SATA IMAGINE covers eligible Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores flights. For another island or mainland Portugal, check the sectors, fare, and baggage allowance of the complete journey.
Azores Airlines from Canada
The airline markets Ponta Delgada–Canada flights. Its North American market information identifies Toronto and Montréal. Use the booking engine for your dates, since departure days and offered itineraries may vary by season.
Ponta Delgada’s airport code is PDL. If the stay starts on another island, include the final airport in the search rather than booking only the Atlantic crossing. Reaching the Azores and travelling between islands may involve several sectors and different operating carriers.
Our Toronto Pearson guide and Montréal lounge guide help with the Canadian departure. Confirm the terminal and boarding zone before choosing a lounge or meeting point.
Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores
Both names appear in SATA IMAGINE, but they should be distinguished when reading the itinerary. Check the operator shown for every flight, especially an inter-island sector.
A single reservation can include different aircraft and services. A cabin description for the Canadian crossing does not automatically describe the product on a regional flight. Read the selected flight’s information before reserving a seat, specific equipment, or assistance.
When building a journey on two tickets, confirm where bags must be collected and checked in again. Consider what happens if the Atlantic flight’s schedule changes. Two flights sold under the same brand or by the same intermediary are not necessarily linked reservations.
Economy, Comfort, and fare families
Azores Airlines’ fare information describes its products. The fare-family name matters alongside the cabin: it determines included services, bags, and conditions to review before payment.
Compare equivalent baskets. For a stay requiring a suitcase and a potentially changeable return, calculate the chosen fare with those services. A lower initial price may be less attractive after adding what is needed in both directions.
Do not assume Comfort guarantees a lie-flat seat on every departure. Open the seat map and read the selected aircraft’s seat features. A fleet photograph or general cabin name is insufficient to establish the exact product.
Checked bags: read the exact fare name
The Azores Airlines baggage chart distinguishes these fare families:
- Economy Simple: no checked bag included.
- Economy Basic and Flex: 1 bag up to 23 kg.
- Economy Top: 2 bags up to 23 kg each.
- Comfort Light: 2 bags up to 23 kg each.
- Comfort Plus: 2 bags up to 32 kg each.
Award-ticket allowances and status benefits follow specific conditions. Read the document issued for the booking, particularly when another airline is involved. A paid-fare chart should not be copied onto every SATA IMAGINE reward.
The weight applies to each piece. For several islands, check onward flights and special items before packing. Add any related charges to the cost of the trip, especially when carrying bulky equipment.
Cabin bags and connections
- Azores Airlines cabin rules: one 55 × 40 × 20 cm carry-on and one 40 × 30 × 15 cm personal item.
- Economy and Comfort Light: 8 kg combined, including the personal item.
- Comfort Plus: 15 kg combined. For SATA Air Açores connections, the page specifies 13 kg for connecting Comfort passengers; check the onward flight’s allowance.
Read the reservation’s cabin-baggage conditions before choosing a case. Dimensions, weight, and special-item acceptance must work for every aircraft involved. A larger aircraft on the Atlantic crossing does not guarantee identical storage on an inter-island flight.
Keep travel documents and belongings needed on arrival accessible. If a bag is checked at the gate, remove what you need during the flight and connection. Check the operating airline’s separate instructions for electronic devices and batteries too.
At check-in, ask which destination is printed on the baggage tag. If the journey includes an overnight or extended stop, confirm bag collection instead of inferring it from the schedule. Keep receipts until every piece has been returned.
Earning and using SATA IMAGINE miles
SATA IMAGINE lets members earn miles on eligible activity and use them for rewards. It covers Azores Airlines, SATA Air Açores, and partners under the program rules. Add the membership number and check the selected booking class.
Earning rates need not be identical across fare families. If mileage earnings influence your purchase, consult the relevant chart before paying. Keep the e-ticket and boarding passes until activity posts to the account.
For a reward, search the dates, sectors, and cabins required for everyone travelling. Record the total mileage and additional payments. A seat offered for money does not establish that the program has released a reward seat on the same flight.
The TAP Portugal partnership
The TAP partnership page describes benefits on eligible TAP flights. It also explicitly says that SATA IMAGINE miles and TAP Miles&Go miles cannot be transferred between the programs.
Choose which program receives eligible flight activity and which program issues an award. A commercial partnership does not let you freely combine two account balances for a reward. Before relying on TAP miles for SATA travel, check the specific transaction in the relevant program’s conditions.
Status privileges also have their own limits. The same partnership information restricts certain services to Azores Airlines-operated flights. A membership card should not be treated as automatic admission to another carrier’s lounges or other benefits.
Paying with Canadian travel points
The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card earns Scene+ points. A credit against an eligible travel purchase can reduce a paid airline ticket. It does not send miles to SATA IMAGINE.
This can suit a paid departure matching your dates when no award is available. Check the points balance, eligible transaction, and credit deadline. The paid ticket retains its original change and refund conditions.
Our points-or-cash calculator helps assess options for the same journey. The best credit cards guide presents Canadian card costs and programs. Include inter-island flights and bags in the calculation: covering the Atlantic ticket does not automatically pay for the whole stay.
Planning a stay across several islands
Write each stage in order with its local date and airport. If you arrive at PDL, stay on another island, and leave from a different airport, search the whole circuit or the relevant individual sectors. A conventional return to the same city is not always the itinerary that matches the stay.
Coordinate rental cars and accommodation with the flights actually booked. If a flight changes, check every reservation depending on it. For a late arrival, confirm collection arrangements with the hotel or car-rental company rather than assuming its usual opening hours will work.
For travel including the mainland, our TAP Air Portugal guide explains that carrier and its separate program. Compare alternatives through to the final destination, including connections and required services.
Worked example: ten nights across two islands
Imagine a ten-night stay starting on São Miguel and continuing on another island. Put all ten nights on the calendar first, then place flights between the stages. Purchasing the Canadian crossing before checking inter-island service can leave a gap between the intended circuit and the actual timetable.
Next, search the return from the island where the stay ends. If it requires going through Ponta Delgada, check whether the two flights can be reserved as one itinerary. If buying the connection separately, identify the airport steps and the change conditions of both reservations.
Start the baggage calculation with the fare family printed on every ticket. A traveller choosing Simple to save money but wanting a checked case must include that expense. Another fare that includes the required service may fit better, without being the best option for every date or itinerary.
Frequent moves also make the size and handling of bags relevant on the ground. A case permitted on the aircraft still has to fit the vehicle booked. Count the pieces actually being carried by the group instead of planning solely around the theoretical maximum weight.
A mileage reservation adds another inventory check. Search the transatlantic and island sectors for everyone travelling before considering a plan complete. If an award is available for the crossing but an onward sector is not, calculate the additional paid ticket and its baggage rather than describing the whole circuit as covered by miles.
Keeping a record of purchased services
Save flight confirmations, seat receipts, bag purchases, and the reference for every booking. Recheck names, local dates, and airports after changes. On a multi-stage journey, a schedule change may affect accommodation, a vehicle pickup, and another flight at the same time.
For an award, retain the issuing program’s receipt and the detail of additional payments. For a bank-points credit, check the airline ticket and card-account transaction separately. A financial credit does not, by itself, confirm the airline itinerary or the services attached to it.
If you book through an intermediary, keep its booking reference and the operating airline’s reference where both are provided. Use the reservation to verify that the services needed for each traveller appear on the relevant flights. An option selected for one direction should not be assumed to apply automatically to all later sectors.
Shortly before travel, reopen the reservations and check the current operational information. If a flight has moved, adjust any linked ground arrangements. Where a published allowance and the issued reservation appear different, ask the issuer or airline to clarify the actual booking before buying more luggage or making assumptions about a connection.
