KrisFlyer: Minimum Balance Required to Search for Award Space

KrisFlyer: Minimum Balance Required to Search for Award Space
Share

Since July 21, 2026, an empty account no longer allows you to view KrisFlyer award space on the Singapore Airlines website. This change may seem technical, but it removes one of the few free tools Canadian travelers have to spot Star Alliance award space before booking with Aeroplan. Let’s look at the details of these changes together.

What’s changing for award space

Until now, anyone could open a KrisFlyer account for free and immediately launch an award availability search, both for Singapore Airlines and its Star Alliance partners. This is no longer the case. A member whose balance is deemed insufficient now sees an error message indicating that their current mile balance does not allow for an award flight search.

Two important clarifications on the scope of this restriction:

  • It affects searching, not booking. Once the threshold is met, you can still search for and book flights that cost significantly more miles than your current balance.
  • The rollout was done in stages, without prior announcement. Members in several countries noticed the block a few days apart.

The exact threshold remains unknown

I must admit, this is the most frustrating part of the issue. Initial reports pointed to a threshold of 1,000 KrisFlyer miles, but members with that balance were subsequently blocked, pushing the estimate toward 1,500 miles. Singapore Airlines has not released any statement and seemingly refuses to clarify.

In a statement to the specialized press, the carrier indicated it has implemented « additional protections on KrisFlyer award searches to protect our systems against automated and repetitive search activity. » It added that it cannot disclose specific thresholds or criteria because they are part of its internal security controls.

Why it matters in Canada

Aeroplan is the primary airline program in the country, providing access to the Star Alliance network. The problem is that Air Canada’s engine doesn’t always display all partner availability clearly, especially for long-haul business class flights.

Many travelers therefore used the Singapore Airlines site as a second pair of eyes, for free, to validate that an award seat actually existed before transferring points or calling Aeroplan. It is this free verification that is now conditional.

How to unlock your account

The most accessible way in Canada is through Marriott Bonvoy, our favorite program. From there, you can transfer to KrisFlyer at a ratio of 3 Marriott Bonvoy points to 1 KrisFlyer mile, with a minimum transfer of 3,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. This minimum gives you exactly 1,000 KrisFlyer miles, and the transfer takes about 2 days.

If the actual threshold is closer to 1,500 miles, plan for 4,500 Marriott Bonvoy points. This is an opportunity cost of a few dozen dollars to maintain access to a search tool, which remains reasonable if you are planning a business class ticket worth over $5,000.

The full procedure for the transfer can be found in our dedicated tutorial.

To accumulate these Marriott Bonvoy points without staying at hotels, the Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card remains the simplest entry point in Canada.

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.

New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:

  • Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
  • Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.

This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.

Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.

To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.

The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.

You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.

Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.

You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.

The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.

Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.

Other search tools

If you don’t want to tie up miles with KrisFlyer, several platforms also cover Star Alliance award availability. We have tested the main ones and published a detailed review of each.

Key takeaways

Singapore Airlines’ move targets disposable accounts used by search bots, not travelers. However, the side effect is real: searching for an award flight for free is becoming a bit harder every year, as programs one by one close their public engines.

Our advice remains simple. If you are seriously aiming for a Star Alliance business class ticket, keep a small active balance in KrisFlyer rather than leaving the account at zero. It’s not an expense; it’s access.

KrisFlyer and Award Space – Frequently Asked Questions

How many miles are needed to search for a KrisFlyer award?

At least 1,000 miles, and possibly 1,500. Singapore Airlines refuses to disclose the exact threshold, stating it is part of its internal security controls. Therefore, plan for 1,500 miles if you want to be certain to gain access, rather than aiming for the reported minimum.

Can I still book with a small balance?

Yes. The restriction applies to searching for availability, not to booking. Once the threshold is met, you can search for and book a ticket that costs many more miles than what is in your account, even if you need to complete the balance with a points transfer.

How can I get 1,000 KrisFlyer miles quickly?

The shortest path in Canada is a Marriott Bonvoy transfer, at a 3:1 ratio. The minimum transfer of 3,000 Marriott Bonvoy points yields exactly 1,000 KrisFlyer miles and takes about 2 days. Our Marriott Bonvoy transfer tutorial details every step.

Why is Singapore Airlines imposing this threshold?

The carrier explains it wants to protect its systems against automated and repetitive search activity. In short, it targets accounts created in bulk by certain award search tools that query its engine continuously, increasing the load on its infrastructure.

Does this restriction affect Star Alliance flights?

Yes, and that is precisely what bothers Canadian travelers. The Singapore Airlines site displayed award availability for Star Alliance partners, making it a good verification tool before an Aeroplan booking. This search is now conditional on having a sufficient balance.

What alternatives exist?

Several platforms cover Star Alliance award availability without requiring a balance with a carrier, including Seats.aero, Roame, PointsYeah, and ExpertFlyer. We have published a detailed review of each to help you choose based on your budget and experience level.
