To the point
Here is my feedback on the Protea Hotel Port Elizabeth Marine in South Africa, belonging to the Marriott Bonvoy program.
Booking
La réservation de quatre nuitées dans cet hôtel de catégorie 2, le Protea Hotel Port Elizabeth Marine, s’est faite à la dernière minute.
En effet, nous avions prévu un échange de maison par points à Port Alfred avec le site HomeExchange et nous nous réjouissions entre autres du tour de ponton à venir offert par nos hôtes sur la rivière Kowie à l’embouchure de l’océan indien.
Une belle maison avec quatre chambres à coucher dont j’avais mis les photos dans le forum de milesopedia sous la rubrique « hébergement alternatif ». Cependant quelques jours avant notre arrivée, Liz la propriétaire de la maison nous écrit un courriel qui se résume à ceci:
La situation de délestage d’électricité s’est amplifiée de sorte qu’il y a des interruptions de courant 2-3 X/jour pendant deux heures. Pas de génératrice comme dans les hôtels pour prendre la relève. De plus, la sécheresse dans la région est à un point tel qu’il ne reste que 5% d’eau potable dans les réserves du barrage et que l’eau courante de la municipalité n’est acheminée dans les maisons qu’au trois jours et ce, pendant quelques heures. Transport d’eau à la chaudière, lavage à la mitaine, piscine d’eau salée… une expérience de l’Afrique du sud.
Liz
Euh… C’en était trop. Cinq adultes sans douche pendant trois jours qui veilleraient à la chandelle ?
Nous avons donc annulé, Liz s’attendant plutôt à cette décision. Nous avons retrouvé nos points d’échange et déniché une place au Protea Hotel Port Elizabeth Marine. La localisation de l’hôtel nous permettait par ailleurs de nous rapprocher des endroits ciblés pour nos safaris.
Location
The hotel is located on the other side of the boulevard that leads to the sea. Right across the street. And if the water was not as hot as expected (23C), it was acceptable and many rooms took advantage of it. A walk for pedestrians, dog-walkers and runners runs along the sea.
Around the hotel
About a kilometre east of the hotel is the quay and its very popular beach, which is actually a little too glaring for our taste. A little further on, a craft market. Then further on, the port with the profile of its giraffes for the transport of goods. Question of staying within the theme 🙂
A few minutes walk to the west this time, a small shopping center with grocery store, pizzeria, a few shops. In short, very practical.
Our room
It was a nice surprise to discover this very large room facing the sea with a king bed, a kitchenette area with microwave, fridge and dishes, a small corner lounge and another one for work.
The room was also available for the same price, mezzanine version. My sister and cousin inherited it.
The bathroom
The hotel is not new but the bathrooms and kitchenettes have obviously been redone.
The hotel services
General aspect
The hotel is unremarkable from the outside. The reception, the lobby and the lounges for the 6@7 are however very elegant and clean as is the outdoor terrace that brought us the sea breeze.
I insist on the 6@7 because every drink is sold with the promotion of two for the price of one during this short period. We are talking about soft drinks, cocktails, beer and wine, by the glass … or by the bottle.
Over here are the South African wine bottles. The snacks and meals we were able to order during this promotion are at regular price and some choices, such as quinoa and cheese balls were interesting.
Breakfast
Although the prices were acceptable for breakfast and buffet dinners, we only tested it once in the room and did not like it: cold sausages and toast, undercooked bacon, served with fries.
The pool
Finally, the swimming pool, really small (it looks like a big jacuzzi) is located on the roof of the hotel where there are also 4 deckchairs. Other than the view, nothing to linger on. Besides, we have to get there by climbing several steps. Access for people with reduced mobility is therefore almost impossible.
Sports hall
The same goes for the little cross gym on the way up.
Our general impression of the hotel
C’est donc un hôtel Marriott Bonvoy de catégorie 2 que nous recommandons, pour ses chambres, son 6@7 dans ses jolis salons et terrasses, sa proximité de la mer, des commerces et des excursions à faire comme les safaris.
Comme tous les hôtels Protea visités pendant notre séjour en Afrique du sud, le personnel est avenant et désireux de bien servir. Nous passons toutefois go pour la nourriture.
