Aeroplan Credit Card – Checked Bag Fees on Air Canada
If you have a piece of baggage to take with you on your trip, you must check it for your flight with Air Canada. For all routes, it must respect the following dimensions:
Maximum weight per bag: 23 kilograms (50 pounds)
Maximum linear dimensions: 158 cm (or 62 inches)
In fact, with Air Canada, the cost of this bag depends on :
The fare category of your ticket
The destination
Your carry on (to be checked in if you book a Basic Economy fare from January 3, 2025)
This is valid for all flights with Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge or Air Canada Express (flights operated by Jazz). For example, here is the fee for a checked bag based on your economy fare for a one-way ticket:
Route
Basic and Standard fares

To facilitate planning, Air Canada offers a checked baggage cost calculator. Plus, there is a feature for calculating the cost of travelling with babies and children.
As of January 3, 2025, if you book a Basic Economy ticket to Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, you will no longer be able to take carry-on baggage on board. You’ll have to put it in the hold and pay the checked baggage fee at the above rate.

Free checked bag with the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card
How to Get Free Checked Bag with your Aeroplan Credit Card
Your TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Cardmust be registered in your profile Aeroplan, on theAir Canada website. With this registration, you will have travel benefits on Air Canada flights.
However, you can pay for your flight ticket with a different credit card.
Here’s how to get your free baggage allowance with Air Canada:
Check in online 24 hours in advance, as usual.
Select “One” as the number of bags to check in. If your Aeroplan card is linked to your Aeroplan account, the total amount should be zero dollars.
At the airport, go to the Air Canada counter to drop off your baggage. At this time, the cardholder must be present with his or her TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card in hand.
Another thing you need to know is that your first flight must be with Air Canada to get free checked bag with a credit card Aeroplan. Not with a partner airline like United.
There is no maximum number of eligible flights per year. That is, no matter how many flights you take with Air Canada, the number of flights with a “free first checked bag” is unlimited.
If an amount is displayed when you enter a baggage item for check-in, select “zero” as the number of baggage items. Then continue with your online check-in and present yourself at the airport check-in counter.
However, check your Aeroplan profile to see if your Aeroplan credit card is linked!
Bottom Line
It’s little tricks like these that can save you a lot of money when you travel.

Which credit card should you choose for travel?
If you travel regularly, the credit card you carry makes a real difference – travel insurance, points earning, airport lounge access and no foreign exchange fees. Use our credit card comparator to filter through 200+ Canadian cards based on your needs, or browse the best credit cards in Canada, ranked monthly by the Milesopedia team.
Do I need to link the card before buying the ticket?
The published terms do not require it. As of September 2026, the [TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card terms](https://www.td.com/ca/en/personal-banking/products/credit-cards/aeroplan/aeroplan-visa-infinite-card) mainly ask for two things: your Aeroplan number must be on the reservation, and the name on the ticket must match the name on your Aeroplan account. An Additional Cardholder links their own Aeroplan number to their card. In addition, TD allows up to 72 hours after card approval or linking for the benefit to activate. Link the card at least three days before check-in.
What if a fee appears during online check-in?
Don't pay for the bag online. The benefit only applies when the bag is checked at the designated Air Canada check-in counter, before security. If you have already checked in, go to the counter with your bag. However, bags checked at the gate are not eligible. Finally, the benefit is not retroactive: no refund is issued for fees already paid.
Does the free bag add to the one included in my ticket?
No. If your first bag is already free, because of your Aeroplan Elite Status or your ticket's fare type, the card does not add an extra bag. The benefit is therefore most useful with a fare that does not include a checked bag, such as Economy Basic.
