Saskatoon Airport YXE: Complete Traveller’s Guide

Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport (YXE) is the main air gateway for central and northern Saskatchewan. It handled 1,516,840 passengers in 2025, its best result since the pandemic, and it serves a catchment area of more than 500,000 people.
One terminal, short walking distances, and a security queue that moves quickly: YXE is an easy airport to get through. Here is what you need to know before you fly, from the carriers on the field to the parking rates, the lounge, and the Aeroplan credit cards worth carrying out of Saskatoon.
General information about YXE
The airport carries the name of John G. Diefenbaker, Canada’s 13th prime minister and a Saskatchewan MP. A major expansion opened in April 2015, and the building can now handle up to 2 million passengers a year, roughly 30 % above current traffic.

The terminal has two levels: departures upstairs and arrivals on the ground floor. Three belts serve domestic flights, while two more handle international arrivals inside the customs hall. In addition, the Canada Border Services Agency staffs a public counter from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Airlines and destinations
Four carriers serve YXE. WestJet leads by a wide margin with 13 destinations, whereas Air Canada concentrates on three high-frequency routes to its own hubs. Porter and RiseAir complete the picture, and RiseAir holds the key to northern Saskatchewan.
WestJet
WestJet is the dominant carrier in Saskatoon. Calgary, its hub, gets 8 to 9 flights a day, which opens the entire network with a single connection.
- Calgary (YYC): 8 to 9 flights daily
- Winnipeg (YWG): 13 flights weekly
- Edmonton (YEG): 1 to 2 flights daily
- Vancouver (YVR): 1 flight daily
- Toronto (YYZ): 6 flights weekly
- Minneapolis (MSP): 4 flights weekly, the only scheduled service to the United States from YXE
- Seasonal: Halifax, Kelowna, Phoenix, Cancún, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, and Punta Cana
The WestJet Rewards programme earns WestJet dollars, which apply to the ticket price including taxes and fees. For that reason, the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard remains the most direct way to build a balance on the ground.
Air Canada
Air Canada concentrates on three routes, all of them to its own hubs. That is a short list. However, the daily frequencies to Vancouver and Toronto open the entire Star Alliance network.
- Vancouver (YVR): 3 flights daily
- Toronto (YYZ): 3 flights daily
- Montreal (YUL): 4 flights weekly, seasonal
Porter Airlines
Porter links Saskatoon and Toronto 5 times a week. The carrier built its product on a single cabin with no middle seat, plus complimentary snacks and drinks. As a result, it makes a solid alternative on that route.
RiseAir
RiseAir serves the communities of northern Saskatchewan from Saskatoon. These routes never appear on mainstream comparison sites, yet they carry the essential air link for an entire region.
- Prince Albert: 10 flights weekly
- Fond du Lac: 5 flights weekly
- Stony Rapids: 1 flight weekly
- Wollaston: 1 flight weekly
The Maple Leaf Lounge at YXE
Saskatoon has exactly one airport lounge: the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge. It opens daily from 4:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., which covers the early departures to Toronto and Vancouver as well as the evening flights.
For an airport this size, that counts as good news. Of the roughly 1.5 million passengers a year, a large share leave early in the morning, precisely when the terminal’s shops have not all opened.
How to get into the lounge
- Star Alliance Gold status: Aeroplan 50K, 75K, and Super Elite members, along with Gold members of other Star Alliance programmes
- Business class ticket: on an Air Canada or Star Alliance flight departing from YXE

Parking at YXE
The airport runs three parking lots, all of them within walking distance of the terminal or served by shuttle. The spread matters: the daily maximum ranges from $11 to $30 depending on the lot you pick.
| Parking lot | Per half-hour (CAD) | Daily maximum (CAD) | Weekly maximum (CAD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ExpressXE (short stay) | $2.50 | $30.00 | $210.00 |
| StandardXE (close in) | $2.50 | $19.00 | $133.00 |
| jetSet (economy) | $1.00 | $11.00 | $77.00 |
| Park & Wait (waiting) | Free | Free | Free |
- ExpressXE: built for picking someone up or for a same-day return trip. Also the priciest by the day
- StandardXE: close to the terminal, with timed electrical outlets for block heaters and five Plugzio charging stations in section E5
- jetSet: the economy lot, linked to the terminal by an on-call shuttle and a walking trail. No electrical outlets at all
- Park & Wait: the free waiting lot, on your right as you come in along Airport Drive
Over a full week, jetSet costs $77 against $133 for StandardXE. That $56 gap usually justifies the few minutes on the shuttle. You pay at the pink kiosks inside the terminal, by cash, credit card, or debit card, or at the lot exits, by card only.
Getting downtown
The airport sits northwest of Saskatoon, a few minutes’ drive from the city centre. You have four ways to make the trip.
Taxi
Seven companies hold a licence to pick up passengers at the terminal: Captain Taxi, Hey Taxi, Radio Cabs, Metro Taxi, Riide, Country Taxi, and Comfort Cab Group. They wait along the curb.
One detail is worth knowing: you choose between the zone flat rate and the meter. The zone rate is quoted upfront, which removes both the surprise and the scenic route. A $2 fee applies either way on trips to and from the airport. You will find the grid on the ground transportation page.
Rideshare
Uber, Lyft, and Spinr all hold contracts with the airport. Pickup happens in the marked rideshare zone along the public curb, in front of the terminal. The same $2 fee applies.
Car rental
Six agencies operate on airport property, with the vehicles parked just outside the terminal: Avis, Alamo, Budget, Enterprise, National, and Hertz. Every other agency in Saskatoon sits off airport land, which means a shuttle or a taxi first.
Hand-controlled vehicles are also available. Book them 72 hours ahead with the agency directly.
City bus
Saskatoon Transit’s Route 11 City Centre/Airport connects the airport to the downtown terminal, where the rest of the network branches out. An adult fare costs $3.25.
- Monday to Friday, daytime: every 30 minutes
- Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.: every 30 minutes
- Evenings, Saturday mornings, Sundays, and statutory holidays: hourly
Several nearby hotels also run a shuttle. Note that these hotel shuttles are not wheelchair accessible.
Services and amenities at YXE
The terminal is compact, yet it covers the essentials. Staff hold the information desk, in the middle of the public area, from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m.
- Free Wi-Fi: a Shaw hotspot covers the whole airport, with no time limit
- ATMs: two machines, one pre-security beside the information desk, the other post-security between gates 5 and 6
- Currency exchange: a self-serve machine pre-security, between the check-in counters and screening, dispensing up to 24 currencies in under a minute
- Pets: two relief areas pre-security at each end of the canopy, plus one post-security at the top of the escalator
- Lost and found: at the information desk. Unclaimed items go to charity or get destroyed after 30 days
Security and customs
YXE runs a single screening checkpoint. With roughly 1.5 million passengers a year spread across a full day, the queues stay short outside the early morning peak.
Saskatoon has no U.S. preclearance. On the WestJet flight to Minneapolis, you clear U.S. customs on arrival. Meanwhile, if your itinerary routes through Toronto, Calgary, or Vancouver, preclearance happens at that stop and you land in the United States as a domestic passenger.
Making the most of your points
The shape of the Saskatoon network points you toward one programme or the other. WestJet offers the most nonstop destinations, whereas Air Canada offers the better door to the rest of the world.
Aeroplan for international trips
With three daily flights to Vancouver and three more to Toronto, Aeroplan reaches almost any Star Alliance destination in one connection. Award rates move with distance and availability, so check the chart when you book rather than trusting a fixed threshold.
- TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card
- CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card
- American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card, which adds access to the YXE lounge
- All the best Aeroplan credit cards
WestJet for the western network
If you mostly fly to Calgary, Edmonton, or south in the winter, WestJet dollars carry one clear advantage: a fixed, readable value. One WestJet dollar equals $1 CAD against the ticket price, taxes included. The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is the entry point to the programme.
Transferable points to keep your options open
When both carriers compete for the same trip, a transferable currency saves you from committing too early. American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to Aeroplan, among others, which keeps the decision open until you book.
Where to stay in Saskatoon
Marriott, Hilton, and IHG all have a presence in Saskatoon, downtown as well as near the airport, and several properties run a shuttle to the terminal. Confirm that service when you book, because it is not automatic and the vehicles are not wheelchair accessible.
To turn those nights into points, match your stay to the right programme, Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, or IHG One Rewards, then pay with a suitable hotel credit card. The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card is the simplest choice if you stay loyal to one chain.
Practical tips for YXE
- Winter: from November to March, budget time for de-icing. Check your flight before you leave home on the departures and arrivals boards
- Block heater: if you leave the car through a deep freeze, StandardXE is the only lot with electrical outlets. jetSet has none
- Early flight: the lounge opens at 4:15 a.m. and the information desk at 4 a.m., ahead of several terminal shops
- The curb: 5 minutes maximum in front of the terminal, under camera enforcement. Use the free Park & Wait lot instead
- Foreign currency: the exchange machine sits pre-security. Once you clear screening, you can no longer reach it
Other airports nearby
On a long-haul trip, comparing with a neighbouring airport sometimes pays off, especially when the fare out of Saskatoon already forces a connection.
| Airport | Code | Driving distance | Why bother |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regina | YQR | About 260 km | Fares sometimes differ on the same routes |
| Edmonton | YEG | About 525 km | Nonstop flights to Europe |
| Calgary | YYC | About 620 km | The widest choice of nonstop flights in the West |
That said, WestJet links Calgary and Saskatoon 8 to 9 times a day. In most cases, the connection costs you less in time and energy than six hours behind the wheel.
Bottom line
YXE is a human-scale airport that does its job well: 13 WestJet destinations, three high-frequency Air Canada routes to the hubs, a door to the north of the province through RiseAir, and a Maple Leaf Lounge that opens at 4:15 a.m.
Two habits cover most of the value here. First, pick the parking lot against the real length of your trip. Second, carry a card that opens the lounge if you often fly at dawn. Our roundup of the best credit cards in Canada will point you to the one that fits how you travel.
