There are two Moxy hotels in Lisbon, the Moxy Lisbon City and the Moxy Lisboa Oriente. Moxy Lisboa Oriente (be careful not to mix them up). The Moxy Lisboa Oriente is the ideal stopover if you’re just passing through and want quick access to the airport or Oriente station.

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – Booking

I booked a single night at the Moxy Lisboa Oriente which I paid for in cash, at the price of 115 euros in October 2022, with my Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card so that I could take advantage of this promotionand get 4,000 extra points with my stay.

If you’re visiting Lisbon in the off-season, you can book for as little as 16,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night, a great deal in this popular European city. Prices easily rise to 30,000 points per night in high season. Here’s a look at the prices for April 2023:

Earning Marriott Bonvoy Points

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points for free stays at over 8,000 hotels worldwide is to be a Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Cardholder (and/or Marriott Bonvoy® Business American Express®* Cardholder).

In addition to the great welcome bonus on both cards, you’ll earn 2 points per dollar on all purchases and 5 points per dollar at Marriott locations. And each year, you’ll earn a certificate for one free hotel night (35,000 point value) as well as 15 Elite nights toward your Marriott Bonvoy status.

The Marriott Bonvoy® American Express®* Card is the best credit card in Canada for free hotel nights.

New Cardmembers can earn up to 110,000 Marriott Bonvoy® points with the current offer:

  • Earn 80,000 points after you spend $6,000 on your Card in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.
  • Plus, earn 30,000 points by making a purchase during your 15th month of Cardmembership.

This offer ends on September 22, 2026. The annual fee is $120, and there is no annual fee on Additional Cards, so you can add a partner or a family member at no extra cost.

Every year after your first Card anniversary, you receive an Annual Free Night Award good for a redemption of up to 35,000 points at eligible hotels and resorts worldwide. At a valuation of 0.9 cents per Marriott Bonvoy point, that certificate is worth roughly $315, which on its own more than covers the $120 annual fee. That is the main reason to keep this Card year after year instead of cancelling it.

To get the most out of the certificate, aim it at a night that would otherwise price close to the 35,000 point ceiling.

The Card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits each calendar year and automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status. Those credits count toward the next Elite tier, so you begin every year 15 nights ahead of where you would otherwise start.

You move up to Gold Elite status automatically when you reach $30,000 in purchases on the Card in a year, or when you combine 10 qualifying paid nights within one calendar year with the 15 Elite Night Credits from your Card.

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally valued at 0.9 cents each. On that basis, the 110,000 point welcome offer is worth about $990, and an Annual Free Night Award used at its full 35,000 point ceiling is worth about $315.

Marriott Bonvoy points pull their weight on free nights rather than on gift cards or merchandise, which is why this Card should be judged on the hotel stays it produces.

You earn 5 points per dollar on eligible purchases at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points per dollar on all other purchases. Points can be redeemed for free nights with no blackout dates at more than 7,000 hotels around the world.

The Card carries a solid package of coverages: $500,000 travel accident insurance, flight delay, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage and hotel or motel burglary at $500 each, car rental theft and damage up to $85,000 for rentals of up to 48 days, Purchase Protection for 90 days and a one year Extended Warranty.

Two things to plan around: the 2.5% foreign transaction fee on purchases made in a foreign currency, and the 21.99% purchase interest rate, which makes this a Card to pay in full every month. Like all American Express Canada Cards, no minimum income is published for this Card, and you can see whether you would be approved before you apply, with no impact on your credit score.

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – Location

As the name suggests, the Moxy Lisboa Oriente is adjacent to the train station, bus station and metro station, all of which are named Oriente. The hotel is also located only 10 minutes from Lisbon airport by metro.

Its location makes it an ideal place to stay after a long day of travel, for those who arrive late at night or have to leave very early in the morning.

Here is the view from my room which was directly overlooking the Oriente station:

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – Check-in

I arrived in the evening and upon check-in was informed that they could not offer me an upgrade despite my Gold status, but I was given a room on the top floor as indicated in my Marriott Bonvoy profile preferences.

I was also informed about the breakfast which cost 10 euros and was not included in my rate, and I decided to try it.

I was not offered a welcome cocktail, which is something they usually offer at check-in in Moxy brand hotels.

The reception is integrated into the same space as the bar and there is a small counter with food, wine and bottled water.

Review : Moxy Lisboa Oriente | Marriott Bonvoy - Moxy Lisboa Oriente 356

Moxy Hotels target mostly young travelers and professionals, its decor is quite urban and follows the trends of being instragram-worthy. You notice it immediately when you walk in the door.

What I really like about Moxy is its inviting common area. After a long day of sightseeing, you can sit at the bar, play a game of babyfoot or just take a moment to relax.

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – Room

Although very compact, the room is comfortable and exactly what I expected.

However, the space has been well thought out so as not to feel too cramped, with a drawer that can be slid under the bed for luggage and a mini bench that can be used as a reading corner.

There is also a flat screen HDTV, two small bottles of water, a safe and wall storage. The window with a view of the Oriente station is quite small. The room is designed more for resting in the evening than for spending the day.

There was no mini-refrigerator, desk, or tea/coffee making facilities, but that was to be expected and I personally had no problem with it as I was only visiting the hotel.

Review : Moxy Lisboa Oriente | Marriott Bonvoy - Moxy Lisboa Oriente 52

The bathroom is equipped with a walk-in shower and MUK toiletries in large format, a more environmentally friendly option than the usual small bottles.

On each floor, there is a common room for ironing as this equipment is not included in the rooms.

Review : Moxy Lisboa Oriente | Marriott Bonvoy - Moxy Lisboa Oriente 328

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – Breakfast

For 10 euros, a very reasonable price, I could enjoy the breakfast buffet. It was quite complete, with a hot and cold buffet including all the essentials: cereals, eggs, fruits, cold meats and cheeses, pastries, coffee, teas and juices, and even pastels de nata, the typical Portuguese specialty. I found the value for money to be worth it.

The food court located on the other side of the reception/bar counter is very pleasant and friendly also with the natural light contributing to the atmosphere.

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – Other services

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – Fitness Room

Although I only stayed one night at the hotel, I was able to take advantage of my Gold status benefit to get a late checkout until 2pm.

So I took the opportunity to work out at the hotel gym located on the mezzanine level. It was a small space, but the basic equipment to train was there, and the boxing or kick-boxing enthusiasts also have everything they need there! The only thing I felt was missing was floor mats, but personally, I’m just happy to have a dedicated workout space when traveling.

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – Coworking space

Workers or digital nomads who want a slightly quieter environment will be delighted with the coworking space at Moxy Lisboa Oriente. Located on the mezzanine, the space offers a more subdued decor with tables with many outlets.

It’s hard to tell if it’s a busy space during the week since I was there on a Sunday, but I would have loved to try it out for a day of work.

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – Around the hotel

As mentioned, the Moxy Lisboa Oriente is perfect for people passing through Lisbon, but its location still gives easy access to Lisbon’s tourist attractions whether by metro, bus, Tuk-tuk or taking an Uber.

The hotel is located in the Nations Park area, which was created to host the Lisbon International Exposition in 1988. It is less than 20 minutes walk from the Oceanário de Lisboa , which is well worth a visit; it is a perfect activity to plan in case of rain.

The hotel is located very close to the water, so you can take a walk along the Jardim Garcia de Orta Park or take a ride on the gondola, which offers a panoramic view of the Nations Park.

Moxy Lisboa Oriente – My general impression

Although short in duration, my stay at the Moxy Lisboa Oriente was pleasant. I liked its location easily accessible by public transportation, especially after a long day of travel (I was in Cinque Terre that morning).

Review : Moxy Lisboa Oriente | Marriott Bonvoy - Moxy Lisboa Oriente 67

The breakfast was good value for money, I was happy to be able to use the fitness room and I liked the common areas as well. This is a hotel that I recommend especially for solo travelers, couples or friends traveling for a comfortable and unpretentious stay.
