KLM: a guide to flying from Canada

KLM connects Canada with Amsterdam Schiphol, where you can continue to Europe and other regions. Before booking, check the cabin, baggage allowance, and operating airline for each flight. The cheapest fare may need several extras to meet your needs.
This guide covers travelling with KLM. For Miles, transfers, and status, see our Flying Blue program page. Our guide to Air France and KLM from Canada covers the two routes through Paris and Amsterdam.
KLM’s Canadian flight listings include Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton to Amsterdam. Schedules and frequencies can change by season. Search your travel dates to find the flights actually available.
If you leave from another city, look at the whole itinerary. A ticket sold by KLM may include a flight operated by a partner. The “operated by” line identifies the airline providing the aircraft and onboard service.
Check the return journey as well. A convenient outbound itinerary can come with a long wait in Amsterdam on the way home. Review the total journey time and number of connections before choosing a flight.
Your cabin and fare are separate choices. Economy, Premium Comfort, and Business describe the travel product. Light, Standard, and Flex describe ticket conditions. The options available depend on the itinerary.
Read KLM’s ticket options, then the conditions shown during your search. Pay particular attention to:
Add up the extras before paying. A more flexible ticket can cost less than an entry fare with several services added. However, an extra you will never use does not justify paying more on its own.
Economy Comfort is a seating option within the Economy cabin. It offers more legroom than a standard seat. Booking that seat does not turn your ticket into Premium Comfort.
Check KLM’s Economy seats and your flight’s seat map. Look at the location of washrooms, exits, and any seat restrictions. An aisle seat may suit travellers who expect to get up frequently.
Seat prices and availability depend partly on your fare and status. Check every segment: choosing a seat for the transatlantic flight does not necessarily reserve a specific seat on your connection.
Premium Comfort is a separate cabin on intercontinental flights that offer it. Its seats are wider and recline further than Economy seats. The service and meals also differ.
It may suit travellers who want more space without buying Business Class. However, the seat does not become a fully flat bed. Check the aircraft’s seat map and the exact fare, particularly its checked baggage allowance.
KLM’s cabin comparison describes the fully flat seats in World Business Class. Review the product offered on your flight and its seat map before purchasing.
A European connection uses a different product. Do not assume the long-haul seat features also apply between Amsterdam and your final destination. Recheck the onboard product after an aircraft change.
KLM’s cabin baggage rules distinguish the small bag under your seat from the pieces placed in the overhead bin:
These weight limits apply to the whole allowance, rather than each piece. Check each operating airline’s rules and local restrictions if your itinerary also passes through the United States.
Keep medication and documents in an accessible bag. Before handing over a cabin suitcase for the hold at the gate, remove items that must stay with you and follow battery instructions.
KLM’s published checked baggage allowance varies by ticket:
The usual maximum total size per piece is 158 cm when adding length, width, and height. Your booking remains the reference for your exact allowance, including status benefits and route exceptions.
Weigh each suitcase separately. A two-piece allowance does not let you freely combine their weight if one bag exceeds its limit. Read the separate conditions for sports equipment and oversized items.
Amsterdam is the main connection point for a KLM journey from Canada to another destination. Read KLM’s transfer instructions, then check the gate and departure time in the app.
Crossing between Schengen and non-Schengen areas involves passport control. The time needed depends on your route, queues, and needs. Allow extra time with children, reduced mobility, or an unfamiliar transfer.
Distinguish a connection on one ticket from two separate tickets. With separate tickets, check baggage collection, check-in requirements, and the conditions that apply after a delay. Before departure, ask staff to confirm the final destination printed on your baggage tag.
If you plan to leave the airport, check entry requirements and the time available. Our Amsterdam travel guide can help you plan a stay. A short connection may not leave enough time for a city visit. Keep the return to the airport, security, and boarding deadline in your plan.
Crown Lounge conditions include access with Business Standard and Flex tickets. Business Light does not include it through the fare alone. An eligible status can provide a separate entitlement.
Check the lounge for your departure area, opening hours, and guest conditions. Our KLM Crown Lounge 52 Non-Schengen review describes a visit in 2022. It shows the facilities at that time; current entry rules come from KLM.
Before leaving Canada, use the airline’s lounge finder to confirm the designated lounge. Access depends on your flight, ticket, status, and the lounge’s own conditions. Read those conditions before including a lounge visit in your travel plans.
Read KLM’s onboard service information before departure. If you need a special meal or assistance, make the request within the deadline shown for your booking.
KLM Wi-Fi depends on the aircraft’s equipment. On equipped intercontinental flights, the Message Pass for Flying Blue members supports text messaging. Other uses may require a paid pass. Download documents and entertainment so you can use them offline.
KLM online check-in generally opens 30 hours before departure, or 24 hours for flights to or from the United States. Check baggage drop-off and gate deadlines: having a boarding pass does not remove the need to meet them.
For an award ticket, search your itinerary using the booking-with-Miles option. Record the required Miles, taxes, cabin, and change conditions. Check the journey time too, especially if the search adds another connection.
Our Flying Blue program page brings together earning, status, and ways to obtain Miles in Canada. This guide focuses on the airline and preparing for your flight.
Before transferring points, confirm the award seat you want and the transfer partner’s conditions. Availability can change while a transfer is processing. Assess the full cost rather than the Miles total alone.
The American Express Cobalt Card is one Canadian card that earns Membership Rewards points. Read its current card page and transfer partner information before choosing that route. Our best credit cards guide helps you compare products for your spending and needs.
