Marriott Bonvoy Tests an Upgrade Waitlist in Its App

Marriott Bonvoy is testing an upgrade waitlist for complimentary upgrades in its mobile app. Spotted on October 11, 2026 on some elite members' accounts, the beta screen shows two numbers ahead of arrival: how many upgrades the hotel estimates it has available for your stay, and where you stand in line.
The idea borrows from airline upgrade lists. For a Canadian member who holds or is chasing Platinum Elite or Titanium Elite status in Marriott Bonvoy, it is the first time the chain has shown your position before you reach the front desk. Marriott has made no official announcement, and the feature is limited to select accounts.
The page appears in the app a few days before the arrival date, on the reservation itself. It brings together four elements:
In the screenshot that circulated, the hotel showed 0 upgrades available and the member was second in line. A top spot means little when the pool is empty.
Nightly Upgrade Awards, the upgrade certificates Platinum Elite members and above can pick as an annual benefit, are processed first. They are not reflected in the waitlist numbers.
In practice, a member who applies a certificate to the same dates moves ahead of everyone, including a Titanium Elite ranked first on the complimentary list. If a suite matters for a specific stay, the certificate is still the safest bet. Our guide to Marriott Bonvoy annual elite benefits walks through that choice.
Room upgrades are part of Marriott Bonvoy's elite benefits, and for Platinum Elite members and above they can include select suites. Qualification thresholds are set in nights per calendar year.
| Tier | Nights required per year | Suites included in upgrades |
|---|---|---|
| Silver Elite | 10 | No |
| Gold Elite | 25 | No |
| Platinum Elite | 50 | Select suites |
| Titanium Elite | 75 | Select suites |
| Ambassador Elite | 100 nights plus US$23,000 in qualifying spend | Select suites |
Status is earned with Marriott Bonvoy elite nights, from stays and from some credit cards. Our Marriott Bonvoy elite status guide explains how to get the most from each tier.
The beta leaves several grey areas Marriott has yet to address:
Turn on notifications in the Marriott Bonvoy app and check your reservation in the days before arrival. If the screen shows 0 upgrades available, a Nightly Upgrade Award or a direct request to the hotel through the app's chat are your two remaining levers.

Since October 2026, Marriott Bonvoy has been testing a complimentary upgrade waitlist that shows your position and the estimated upgrades available, with confirmation 1 day before arrival. The feature is in beta on select accounts only. If you hold Platinum Elite or Titanium Elite status, keep an eye on your next reservation, and save your upgrade certificates for stays where a suite really matters: they go ahead of the line.
