Air Europa SUMA is the loyalty program of Air Europa, Spain’s second-largest airline. A member of the SkyTeam alliance, it connects its Madrid hub to about twenty destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as Miami and New York. Its Boeing 787s offer lie-flat seats in Business Class on these routes.

Until recently, this program remained out of reach for Canadians. No co-branded credit card exists here, and no Canadian banking program transferred to SUMA. Since July 29, 2026, the situation has changed: American Express opened transfers from Membership Rewards to ALL Accor Live Limitless. Now Accor converts its Reward points to Suma Miles at parity.

This chain therefore creates a new Canadian gateway to a SkyTeam program. However, it involves a conversion cost that must be measured before diving in. This guide details earning Suma Miles from Canada, their use, program status levels, and the actual value calculation.

Earning Suma Miles from Canada

The program distinguishes two currencies. On one hand, Suma Miles are used for redemptions. On the other hand, Status Miles count only toward qualification and are never redeemed. Here are the ways to earn Suma Miles when you live in Canada.

The Membership Rewards, Accor, SUMA chain

This is the only route that allows a Canadian to fund a SUMA account without flying. It unfolds in two successive steps, each with its own ratio.

The American Express transfer requires a minimum of 1,000 Membership Rewards, then increments of 100. You must also hold an active ALL Accor account. Next, Accor accepts conversions to airlines starting at 2,000 Reward points, in increments of 2,000.

Remember especially the ratio of the second step. Indeed, Accor converts its points to most airline programs at a rate of 2,000 points for 1,000 miles. Air Europa is an exception with 2,000 Reward points for 2,000 Suma Miles. This is the best exit ratio from the Accor program, tied with Iberia Plus.

Other hotel partners

Air Europa works with several hotel chains, mainly Spanish. These partnerships are less interesting for Canadians, as no banking program here transfers points to them. They remain useful, however, if you stay in Spain or the Caribbean.

The transfer also works in the other direction. Thus, 4 Suma Miles give you 1 Accor Reward point. This exit ratio is poor, so avoid it except to clear a residual balance.

Flying with Air Europa and SkyTeam

On Air Europa flights, earning depends on the ticket price. You thus earn up to 9 Suma Miles per euro spent, depending on your fare class and status. Airport taxes do not count.

On SkyTeam airlines, the calculation changes completely. Indeed, the program then applies a scale based on distance flown and the booking class of the ticket. A discounted economy ticket therefore earns much less than a full-fare ticket.

Air Europa also credits 787 welcome Miles after your first flight with the airline. This nod to the Boeing 787 is added to the Miles from the flight itself.

Purchasing Suma Miles

The program sells Miles starting at €22. You can also gift them to another member. Air Europa regularly launches promotions with bonuses, sometimes up to 50% additional Miles.

This option is mainly used to top up a balance. For example, if an award flight costs you 2,000 Miles and you hold 1,700, purchasing the missing 300 often costs less than a transfer from Accor.

How much is a Suma Mile worth for a Canadian

This is the central question before any transfer. Milesopedia values the Membership Rewards point at 1.7¢ and the ALL Accor Reward point at 3.1¢. These two benchmarks allow calculation of the break-even threshold for the chain.

The calculation then becomes simple. To match the Accor hotel discount, your Suma Mile must be worth at least 3.1¢. To beat a direct transfer to Aeroplan, it must reach 4.0¢. This is a demanding threshold, which only long-haul Business Class redemptions can achieve.

Using your Suma Miles

Award flights on Air Europa

Air Europa does not impose any fixed chart on its own flights. The program instead applies dynamic pricing, without restrictions on class, fare, or date. In other words, if a seat remains for sale, you can book it with Miles.

Redemptions start at 1,500 Suma Miles on short routes. Conversely, a round-trip in Business Class between Madrid and New York or Miami requires approximately 100,000 Miles. Taxes and surcharges remain payable in cash.

This flexibility is the program’s main strength. Indeed, you do not depend on the opening of a separate award inventory, unlike most North American airline programs.

Award flights on partners

Suma Miles also book flights on partner airlines. The threshold then rises to 6,000 Suma Miles for the majority of them. Here are the main accessible carriers.

On these flights, the number of Miles depends on distance and cabin. Additionally, availability is limited to award seats that the partner opens to the alliance.

Other possible redemptions

Expiration of Suma Miles

Since January 1, 2022, each Suma Mile remains valid for 24 months. Any activity on the account resets this counter: a flight, a stay with a partner, a car rental, a Miles purchase, or an incoming transfer.

Status Miles follow a different rule. They expire after 12 months, whether or not your account records any activity. No activity extends this period.

Air Europa SUMA status levels

The program has four levels. Three of them grant a SkyTeam status recognized at all alliance airlines, including departing from Canada.

The calculation is based on a rolling 12 months, unrelated to the calendar year. However, one condition blocks Canadians: you must complete at least 4 flights on Air Europa to access a higher level. Yet none of these flights can depart from Canada.

Benefits by level

Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels remain valid for 12 months from their attainment. Gold status also opens SkyTeam lounges on international flights, which remains its most concrete advantage for a Canadian traveler.

The SUMA family account

Air Europa allows pooling of Miles within the same household. Up to seven members can join a family account, adults and minors combined. Creation remains free.

Each member continues to earn their Miles individually, while feeding the common balance. An adult administrator manages the account, adds or removes members, and decides who can draw from the family balance. Status Miles, however, remain personal and non-transferable.

This mechanism deserves your attention if several people in your household hold Membership Rewards. You can thus pool modest transfers toward a common goal, rather than accumulating balances too small to be useful.

Our opinion on Air Europa SUMA

In summary, Air Europa SUMA remains a niche program for Canadians. It does not replace Aeroplan or Flying Blue as the default destination for your Membership Rewards. However, it becomes relevant in a specific case: booking a lie-flat seat on an Air Europa Boeing 787 between Madrid and Latin America, a flight that no Star Alliance program can open.
