Porter and British Airways: What the Codeshare Means for Canadian Travellers

Porter and British Airways: What the Codeshare Means for Canadian Travellers
Share

Porter Airlines and British Airways finalized a codeshare agreement on June 24, 2026. As of July 8, 2026, 17 Canadian destinations will be bookable through British Airways’ platform, with tickets carrying a BA flight number. For travellers who collect points, this agreement opens new possibilities, along with a few important nuances to know before booking.

What the agreement covers

The agreement lets British Airways customers book Porter flights under a « BA » flight number directly on ba.com, as part of an itinerary that includes a transatlantic connection from London. Porter’s Canadian domestic flights cannot be booked on their own under a BA code: the codeshare is activated only in conjunction with a British Airways flight to or from the United Kingdom.

The 17 Canadian destinations available through this partnership are:

  • Calgary,
  • Charlottetown,
  • Deer Lake,
  • Edmonton,
  • Halifax,
  • Kelowna,
  • Montreal (Trudeau and MET),
  • Ottawa,
  • Quebec City,
  • Saskatoon,
  • St. John’s (Newfoundland),
  • Thunder Bay,
  • Toronto (Pearson),
  • Vancouver,
  • Victoria
  • and Winnipeg.

Connections are made via Toronto Pearson or Montreal Trudeau.

What it changes for British Airways Executive Club members

British Airways Executive Club account holders can now earn Avios and tier points on Porter-operated flights, provided the booking shows a BAXXXX flight number. This is a concrete advantage for travellers who regularly transit through London and want to make the most of their points on Canadian segments.

This agreement complements, without replacing, the existing agreement between British Airways and WestJet. Travellers now have two Canadian regional carrier options for their connections from London.

What it does not change (yet) for VIPorter members

As of this article’s publication, the codeshare does not provide for any point transfers between VIPorter and Avios, nor the ability to redeem VIPorter points for British Airways flights or vice versa. This is an operational agreement (shared flight numbers and joint ticketing), not a reciprocal loyalty partnership.

In practice: if you fly with Porter on a codeshare ticket booked via ba.com, you earn Avios (if you are an Executive Club member), but your VIPorter points do not accrue automatically on that same flight. To earn VIPorter points, you must book directly through the VIPorter portal or flyporter.com.

To earn VIPorter points day to day and make the most of your Porter flights, two cards are designed for the program:

Who really benefits from this agreement

The agreement is mainly advantageous for two profiles:

  • Canadian travellers heading to the United Kingdom: they can now complete their entire itinerary (secondary Canadian city and transatlantic flight) on a single ticket, with one baggage check-in.
  • Avios program members who want to earn points on Canadian segments operated by Porter, via flights that include a BA transatlantic connection.

For Canadian travellers who collect points transferable to Avios, this agreement changes nothing about earning or transfer rules: it is an operational codeshare, not a new loyalty program. Your earning habits on your cards stay the same.

Milesopedia recommendations

If you regularly travel between a mid-sized Canadian city (Ottawa, Halifax, Quebec City, Winnipeg) and the United Kingdom, this agreement simplifies logistics: a single ticket, a single booking, bags checked through to your destination. That is the main value of this partnership for Canadian travellers.

If your priority is collecting points, wait for a possible announcement of a reciprocal loyalty partnership between VIPorter and Avios before changing your earning strategy. For now, keep booking via flyporter.com to earn your VIPorter points, and via ba.com to earn your Avios on combined itineraries.

Frequently asked questions

When can I book Porter flights through British Airways?

Bookings have been open since June 24, 2026 on ba.com. The first flights operated under this agreement begin on July 8, 2026.

Can I earn Avios on a Porter flight booked via ba.com?

Yes, provided your ticket shows a BAXXXX flight number and you are a British Airways Executive Club member. Tier points are also earned.

Can I use my VIPorter points to book a BA flight via this codeshare?

No. The codeshare does not allow point exchanges between VIPorter and Avios. It is an operational partnership, not a reciprocal loyalty agreement.

Does this codeshare replace the BA-WestJet agreement?

No. The two agreements coexist. British Airways maintains its partnership with WestJet and now adds Porter as a second Canadian regional carrier in its network.

Can I book a Porter domestic flight on its own on ba.com?

No. The codeshare applies only to itineraries that include a British Airways transatlantic flight to or from London. A Porter Toronto-Ottawa ticket booked on its own cannot be issued under a BA flight number.

Which Canadian cities are covered by this agreement?

17 destinations: Calgary, Charlottetown, Deer Lake, Edmonton, Halifax, Kelowna, Montreal (Trudeau and MET), Ottawa, Quebec City, Saskatoon, St. John’s (Newfoundland), Thunder Bay, Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, Victoria and Winnipeg.
