The 17 suppliers that accept Amex
You can pay these 17 suppliers with an American Express card, according to their own Canadian terms of sale, FAQ or billing pages. Keep one nuance in mind: a supplier may accept Amex online or at the counter, yet ask for another payment method on a net 30 account.

Construction, HVAC and electrical
You can put a good share of your job-site purchases on your Amex card. These suppliers say so clearly:
Carrier Enterprise Canada (heating and cooling): its terms of use name Visa, Mastercard and American Express, online and on accounts with credit terms.
Franklin Empire (electrical supplies): its FAQ lists Visa, Mastercard and American Express. You need a customer account to order online.
Home Depot Canada: its payment methods FAQ includes American Express, online and in store.
BMR and Canac: the BMR FAQ and the Canac FAQ both name American Express. At Canac, this applies to every store and to the website.
RONA also shows the American Express logo at the bottom of rona.ca. Its older FAQ mentions only Visa and Mastercard for online payment, so we recommend you confirm in store. The former Réno-Dépôt stores became RONA+ stores in 2024.
Health: dental, veterinary and hearing
Do you run a clinic? Three specialized suppliers accept Amex in Canada:
IDEXX Canada (veterinary lab): its billing page names American Express, with automatic payment available and no processing fee.
Sinclair Dental: its FAQ lists Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Its general terms only mention Visa and Mastercard, so ask for confirmation when you open your account.
ReSound (GN Hearing): its Canadian terms accept American Express for hearing clinics.
Restaurants and bars: the LCBO and the SAQ
Do you run a restaurant or a bar? Your alcohol purchases can earn you points. The LCBO lists American Express among its payment methods, and the SAQ accepts it in store and online in Quebec.
Shipping, advertising and technology
Your shipping costs and digital tools come back every month, which makes them a good fit for a card that earns points.
Purolator: you can pay your invoices with Visa, Mastercard or American Express, by phone, online or by automatic payment.
Amazon Business Canada: Amazon.ca help lists American Express.
Amazon Web Services (AWS): AWS Canada accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express.
Microsoft Advertising: its Canada page accepts American Express in Canadian dollars.
Google Ads: Google accepts cards that carry the Amex logo.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram) also accepts Amex, but its help page states that a Canadian billing address must pay in US dollars with Amex. You would then pay a 2.5% foreign exchange fee on every invoice.
These suppliers refuse American Express
Before you count on your points, check these suppliers. According to their own Canadian documents, they do not accept Amex:
Superior Propane: its payment insert states "We do not accept American Express credit cards."
Phonak and Unitron (Sonova Canada): their Canadian terms of sale (Phonak, Unitron) only name Visa and Mastercard, while their US versions accept Amex.
NAPA Canada: its online store terms limit payment to Visa and Mastercard.
Commonwealth Plywood: its online purchase terms state that it accepts no credit cards.
For these suppliers, we recommend you keep a business Visa or Mastercard. The TD Business Travel Visa* Card costs $149 a year, with the annual fee rebated in the first year.

The TD Business Travel Visa* Card is a business credit card built to turn your company's everyday spending into travel points, with expense-management tools.
With the current welcome offer, you can earn up to 200,000 TD Rewards Points (a value of up to $1,300):
30,000 TD Rewards Points when the Primary Cardholder makes their first purchase
120,000 TD Rewards Points when spending $15,000 within the first 180 days
30,000 TD Rewards Points when spending $25,000 within the first 365 days

Plus, the $149 annual fee is rebated for the first year for the Primary Cardholder and first four Additional Cardholders ($49 each).
The card earns 9 points per $1 on travel booked online through ExpediaForTD.com, 6 points per $1 on dining, EV charging, public transit, recurring bill payments and foreign-currency purchases (up to $80,000 per category annually), and 2 points per $1 on all other purchases. It also includes a suite of travel insurance and the TD Card Management Tool.

Card fees: run the numbers
A card earns you points, but some suppliers charge you for paying by card. The math is simple: divide the fee by the number of points you earn.
Dryco Building Supplies: its payment portal adds a 2.4% fee to an invoice paid by card.
Groupe Deschênes: its account terms state that a card payment is "net, with no discount." You lose the 2% early payment discount.
Take a $5,000 invoice at Dryco:
2.4% fee: $120
With the Business Platinum Card (1.25 points per dollar): 6,250 Membership Rewards points, so it only pays off if each point is worth more than 1.9¢
With the Marriott Bonvoy Business Card (2 points per dollar): 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, so it only pays off if each point is worth more than 1.2¢
Most specialized distributors accept "credit cards" without saying which ones: Lumen, Guillevin, Wolseley, Wesco, Deschênes, Patterson and CDMV are in this group. You can get the answer in three steps:
Look for card logos at the bottom of the online store or on the invoice payment page.
Read the credit application: the payment terms section often names the accepted cards.
Call the accounts receivable department and ask two questions: do you accept American Express, and do you charge a fee on card payments?
Which Amex card to pay your suppliers
You have three American Express business cards to consider, each with its own profile:
Marriott Bonvoy® Business American Express®* Card: $150 a year, 2 points per dollar on everyday purchases and 3 points on gas, dining and travel. On $10,000 of supplies a month, you earn 240,000 Marriott Bonvoy points a year.
Business Platinum Card® from American Express: $799 a year, 1.25 points per dollar on everything. It is a charge card with no preset spending limit, useful for large invoices. On the same $10,000 a month, you earn 150,000 Membership Rewards points, which you can transfer to Aeroplan among others.
We recommend you pay with Amex at the confirmed suppliers, and keep a Visa or Mastercard for the ones that refuse it. Before every large payment, run the card fee math: a lost 2% discount can be worth more than the points you earn.
Which business suppliers accept American Express in Canada?
According to their Canadian websites, 17 suppliers accept it, including Carrier Enterprise, Franklin Empire, Home Depot, Canac, IDEXX, the LCBO, the SAQ, FedEx, Purolator, Amazon Business and Microsoft Advertising. The table at the top of this article sorts them by industry, with the nuances that apply to each one.
What should I do if my supplier does not accept Amex?
Keep a business Visa or Mastercard for those invoices. That way, you keep earning points at suppliers that refuse Amex, such as Superior Propane, Phonak or NAPA online.
Can a supplier charge a fee for card payments?
Yes, some do. Dryco adds 2.4% to an invoice paid by card, and Groupe Deschênes removes its 2% early payment discount. Divide the fee by the points you earn: if the result is higher than the value of a point, pay another way.
Does the Business Platinum Card have a spending limit?
No, it is a charge card with no preset spending limit: you pay the full balance every month. That makes it a good fit for large supplier invoices, such as a materials or equipment order.
Do Amex business cards require a minimum personal income?
No. For the Business Platinum Card, the Marriott Bonvoy Business Card and the Aeroplan Business Reserve Card, American Express reviews the application based on the business, with no published personal income threshold.
Which Amex business card earns the most on supplies?
The Marriott Bonvoy Business Card earns 2 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar on everyday purchases, for $150 a year. The Business Platinum Card earns 1.25 Membership Rewards points per dollar, but those points transfer to Aeroplan and other programs, which can be worth more depending on how you travel.
Does the list of suppliers that accept Amex change?
Yes. A supplier can start or stop accepting Amex, or add a card fee, without announcing it. Before you pay a large invoice, check the supplier's payment page or call its accounts receivable department.
