- net gain in year one: about $314 if you pick groceries as one of your categories.
The Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard
Amazon's card, issued by MBNA, has no annual fee. Prime members earn 2.5% at Amazon.ca and Whole Foods Market (1.5% without Prime) and 1% on everything else, in rewards redeemable for Amazon.ca gift cards. On the same profile, it earns about $363 in year one, in Amazon credit.
Fees, Rates and Conditions to Know
- No annual fee, and a grace period of at least 21 days when you pay your balance in full.
- The welcome offer gives 5% on your first $3,000 of eligible purchases over 6 months: that is a cap, not a target to reach.
- Posted rates: 21.74% on purchases, 21.99% on cash advances and on balance transfers.
- Interest on a cash advance or a balance transfer starts the day of the transaction, with no grace period.
- One application covers both the card and the Amazon account: a single inquiry on your credit file.
For a low-fee card that also boosts online purchases, the National Bank ECHO Cashback Mastercard gives 1.5% on online purchases, gas and groceries, for $30 a year.
The Amazon.ca Gift Card Grocery Store Trick
Paying for Amazon purchases with Amazon.ca gift cards bought at the grocery store lets you earn your card's grocery rate instead of its base rate. Before you do, read your card's terms: some issuers exclude gift cards from bonus categories.
As the holidays approach, the Amazon.ca gift card solves two things at once: the last-minute gift and the rebate. Bought with a card that boosts groceries or online purchases, it earns at the time of purchase rather than at checkout.
What to know before you buy one:
- you can buy it on Amazon.ca or in participating grocery stores, pharmacies and convenience stores;
- it does not expire, and its balance can be spent over several purchases;
- once purchased, it cannot be exchanged for cash, unless the law requires it;
- its balance shows in your Amazon account.
Conclusion
At $99 a year, Amazon Prime pays for itself quickly if you order regularly on Amazon.ca and use at least one other perk, such as Prime Video or DashPass. If you only order a few times a year, the 30-day free trial lets you test it during a busy shopping period.
Pay for it with a card that earns on Amazon.ca, and your membership costs less every year.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Amazon Prime cost in Canada?
Amazon Prime costs $9.99 a month or $99 a year in Canada, plus tax. The annual plan saves about $21 a year, and new members get a 30-day free trial.
How much does Prime Video cost in Canada?
Prime Video is included with a Prime membership, at $9.99 a month or $99 a year. Movies and series include limited ads; the ad-free option adds $2.99 a month. Live content and sports keep their ads.
Is there a discounted rate for students?
Yes. Prime for Young Adults costs $4.99 a month or $49 a year after a 6-month free trial. It is open to students and to 19- to 24-year-olds.
Can you share Amazon Prime with your family?
Amazon Family lets you invite one other adult in your household to share delivery, Prime Video, deals, Amazon Luna and DashPass. Each person keeps their own account, and the option is not available with Prime for Young Adults.
Is DashPass really included with Prime?
Yes, Prime members get DashPass at no extra cost: $0 delivery and reduced service fees on eligible DoorDash orders.
How do I cancel Amazon Prime and get a refund?
In "Manage Prime Membership", choose "Cancel membership". If you have not used any benefit during the current period, Amazon refunds that period in full within 3 to 5 business days. A membership started in the Android app is managed in Google Play.
Should you get the Amazon.ca Rewards Mastercard?
It has no annual fee and gives Prime members 2.5% back at Amazon.ca and Whole Foods Market, but its rewards stay Amazon gift cards. If a good share of your spending happens elsewhere, a cash back card you can use anywhere earns more.
When are Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days?
Amazon holds two events for Prime members. In 2026, Prime Day ran from June 23 to 26, and Prime Big Deal Days took place on October 6 and 7. The best deals are gathered on our Amazon Prime deals page.
Should you close the Amazon.ca card after the offer?
Nothing forces you to: the card has no annual fee, so keeping it costs nothing. According to Equifax Canada, a hard inquiry stays on your file for up to 3 years and a closed account in good standing for up to 6 years. Closing the card also removes a credit limit from your utilization ratio. If you no longer use it, an occasional purchase is enough to keep it active.
