Yes, a car remains essential for exploring Banff, Jasper and the Rockies from Calgary. Regional public transit is limited outside downtown Calgary.
Three to four days allow you to cover Banff and Lake Louise at a good pace. Add two more days to go as far as Jasper via the Icefields Parkway.
Summer (June to September) offers the best access to trails and mountain roads. Winter attracts ski enthusiasts, with several well-known resorts less than two hours from Calgary.
