W Muscat: Our Family Stay in Muscat

After our journey through Oman, we wanted to settle down for a few days in a comfortable place that was accessible for children, ideally with a large swimming pool. Our choice fell on the W Muscat, located beachfront in Shatti Al Qurum. Suffice it to say, this family stay with Jean-Maximilien, Alexandra, and Arthur will remain one of the highlights of our trip.
The W Muscat is part of the Marriott Bonvoy collection. It is an excellent candidate for using points, especially for families. Before you go, I highly recommend consulting the best credit cards for earning Marriott Bonvoy points as well as the page for the best credit cards in Canada to prepare for your next trip.

The W Muscat opened its doors in 2019. The hotel features 279 rooms and suites and occupies an ideal beachfront location in Shatti Al Qurum. Note: downtown Muscat is ten minutes away by car, and the international airport is approximately 25 minutes away. The Royal Opera House Muscat is located right next door, making it a perfect base for exploring the city.
The architecture blends bold contemporary design with touches of Omani inspiration. Blue geometric patterns, mashrabiya screens, and sculpted walls recall local craftsmanship. Nevertheless, the W brand remains true to its signature: bright colors, designer furniture, and a dynamic atmosphere.

From the moment you arrive, the tone is set. The entrance is spectacular, with its bright pink W logo and modern architecture. The valet helped us with our suitcases, and we headed to reception. With two children tired from the road, this kind of small attention makes all the difference.
Check-in was quick. We had been upgraded to a family suite, and the front desk agent took the time to explain to Alexandra and Arthur that the towels by the pool were complimentary. The lobby is striking: black marble, a designer ceiling with LED lighting, and a wall of interactive screens. It shows just how much the hotel relies on the “wow” effect.

Our suite was spacious, with a king bed for Jean-Maximilien and me, and an additional sofa bed for Alexandra and Arthur. The children were delighted: their own “little corner” right next to the lounge. Plan to request the configuration in advance if you are traveling with children—not all rooms are modular.
The design is bold. A headboard with blue geometric patterns, a circular rug with black and white patterns, and gold armchairs. It is not the style I would choose for my own home, but it works here. The children loved it: for them, it was like entering a world of play.

The bathroom is one of the most impressive spaces in the room. A circular freestanding bathtub, blue tiles with geometric patterns inspired by Islamic art, an arched mirror, and veined marble in the shower. Alexandra wanted to take her bath in that tub on the very first night, which says it all!
The walk-in closet is generous, with wooden storage and drawers featuring geometric patterns. Practical when unpacking four suitcases for a few days.

A special mention for the minibar and coffee corner. The gold geometric patterns on a black background are inspired by Omani craftsmanship, but with a contemporary twist. Upon arrival, we found a welcome tray with fresh fruit, fine chocolates, and pastries. The children jumped on it before we had even unpacked our bags.

Our balcony was adorned with geometric mashrabiyas, typical of Omani architecture. It offered a view of the gardens and the pool. We had coffee there every morning while Alexandra and Arthur had fun counting the palm trees. Magic.

The main pool is immense for a hotel of this size. It feels more like a beach resort than a simple hotel pool. This is where the children spent most of their days. There are plenty of sun loungers, and we never had to rush to reserve one in the morning.
The atmosphere is festive without being noisy. From time to time, a coordinator starts an activity in the pool—aqua aerobics, games for children. Alexandra participated twice, while Arthur watched from the side. Servers pass by regularly with drinks and fresh coconuts. Note: we received a welcome voucher for two coconuts at the Wet Deck bar. A simple but appreciated pleasure.

With the room key, you can directly access Shatti Al Qurum beach through a gate behind the pool. The beach is not a white-sand Caribbean beach—it is more of a long seaside promenade frequented by Omanis and families. For us, it was perfect. The children flew kites, and we walked until sunset.
Note: the beach does not have postcard-perfect turquoise water. But the atmosphere is well worth the detour. People play volleyball, badminton, and have picnics. It is lively, safe, and there are no touts—a real joy.

Harvest is the hotel’s main restaurant for breakfast and certain meals. The entrance is spectacular, with its walls featuring undulating blue patterns. Inside, the blue mosaic ceiling is one of the most beautiful I have seen in a hotel.

The breakfast buffet at the W Muscat is, without a doubt, one of the best we have experienced as a family. Marriott Bonvoy Platinum members and above receive it for free, making it a major benefit for credit card holders who have access to the status.

I highly recommend having your breakfast on the outdoor terrace. Coffee in the sun, a sea breeze, palm trees: it sets the tone for the day. Alexandra and Arthur devoured pancakes while Jean-Maximilien and I took our time with a coffee. It is one of those simple moments that stays in your memory for a long time.
The hotel’s lounge bar is another highlight. Curved benches, soft lighting, and a view of the sea. We had a drink there one evening while the children watched a movie in the room. The atmosphere is chic but not stuffy—which is rare and appreciated.

The gym is equipped with Technogym, including a punching bag and large floor-to-ceiling windows. It is decent but not exceptional—a few structural pillars make it feel a bit crowded. The spa is more convincing, located in a separate pavilion with traditional Omani architecture. We didn’t have time this time, but it’s noted for a future stay.

Traveling as a family requires compromises. A hotel must please adults without boring the children. The W Muscat checks both boxes brilliantly. For Jean-Maximilien and me, it was the bold design, the lounge bar, the freestanding tub, and the breakfast terrace. For Alexandra and Arthur, it was the pool, the fresh coconuts, and the room that felt “like a cartoon.”
Would we go back? Yes, without hesitation. For a stay of two or three nights as a family, after a road trip or before a long flight, the W Muscat is an excellent choice. I wouldn’t stay there for an entire week, as Oman has so much to offer beyond the hotel. But as a comfortable and stimulating respite for the children, it is a favorite.

Yes, the hotel opens directly onto Shatti Al Qurum beach. With your room key, you can access the beach through a gate behind the pool. Note: it is more of a long seaside promenade frequented by locals than a paradise white-sand beach. However, the family atmosphere makes it a very pleasant place.

For our family, two to three nights were perfect. It is enough time to enjoy the pool, the beach, the breakfast, and take a quick trip to downtown Muscat. Beyond that, I recommend combining it with a road trip in Oman to discover the diversity of the country.
