If you&#8217;re planning a trip to Tunisia and intend to follow an itinerary from Tunis, the capital, to Tozeur, deep in the heart of the Sahara, this guide offers a selection of must-see attractions. I stayed there from November 30th to December 7th, and I\u2019m sharing my discoveries with you here.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;423495&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Sousse: Relaxation and Culture by the Sea&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;sousse_relaxation_and_culture_by_the_sea&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>After a direct flight from Montreal to Tunis on Tunisair, my group and I immediately headed south for a stopover in Sousse, a lively coastal city rich in history.<\/p>\n<p>We visited Sousse&#8217;s archaeological museum, in the heart of the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The museum houses an impressive collection of Roman mosaics, including the &#8220;Triumph of Neptune&#8221; and &#8220;Bacchus and the Seasons&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>We ended the day at Port El Kantaoui, with its picturesque streets, artisan shops, restaurants, and beautiful 18-hole golf course.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;423486&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Also not to be missed in Sousse:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Medina: Stroll through its historic streets and explore the bustling souks, rich in spices, carpets and local crafts.<\/li>\n<li>The Great Mosque: A 9th-century masterpiece, a symbol of early Islamic art.<\/li>\n<li>The Kasbah: A historic fortress dating from the 9th century, located in the medina. Built in the 3rd century, this architectural masterpiece reflects the grandeur and significance of the region under the Roman Empire. Walking through its vast arenas and galleries, a guided tour took me back in time. Today, the site hosts international concerts.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;423476&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Matmata: A Berber Village with a Unique Setting&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;matmata_a_berber_village_with_a_unique_setting&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>En route to the desert further south, we stopped off at Matmata, a Berber village in the desert hills, famous for its troglodyte dwellings. These underground houses, carved out of the rock, offer a glimpse of traditional Berber life. If you&#8217;re a film fan, you may recognize these iconic settings, used in the Star Wars saga.<\/p>\n<p>Food &amp; lodging idea: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/tn\/diar-matmata-diar-el-barbar.en-gb.html?aid=853482\">Hotel Diar El Barbar<\/a>, where I enjoyed a delicious, typically Tunisian meal.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;423478&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Tozeur: Land of Desert and Oasis&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;tozeur_land_of_desert_and_oasis&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Tozeur, the capital of southern Tunisia, is enchanting with its lush palm groves stretching over almost 1,000 hectares. We explored the oasis on foot, but it&#8217;s just as enjoyable to do so by bike or scooter. Don&#8217;t miss the opportunity to watch a date-picking demonstration, this iconic fruit of the region.<\/p>\n<p>For a bit of cultural immersion, we visited the Eden Palm Museum, highlighting local traditions linked to date palms; the IRADA Eco-camping site, a small plot of land in the oasis with an ecological hut offering activities with local artisans; and Cosmonat-Lobna, a producer of organic skincare products.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;423462&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Also not to be missed in Tozeur:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Medina: its narrow streets are lined with clay-brick houses featuring unique geometric designs.<\/li>\n<li>Dar Chera\u00eft Museum: Immerse yourself in the region&#8217;s rich heritage, with reconstructions of traditional scenes.<\/li>\n<li>Chott El Jerid: Tunisia&#8217;s largest salt lake. Its changing reflections, oscillating between pink and pearly white, offer an unforgettable spectacle, particularly at sunrise or sunset.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.civitatis.com\/fr\/tozeur\/excursion-chebika-tamerza-mides\/?aid=101389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mountain Oasis<\/a>: Take a trip to Chebika, Tamerza and Mides, three oases perched in the heart of the mountains, with waterfalls and spectacular views.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.civitatis.com\/fr\/tozeur\/visite-star-wars\/?aid=101389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Star Wars settings<\/a>: Film buffs can visit the filming locations of the famous saga, such as Tataouine, located in the desert just a few kilometres from the city.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;423470,423472,423480,423468,423466&#8243; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Accommodation ideas: the chic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/searchresults.en-gb.html?aid=853482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palm Beach<\/a> hotel; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/tn\/dar-saida-beya.en-gb.html?aid=853482\">Dar Saida Beya<\/a>, a charming hotel designed in typical traditional style in the center of Tozeur; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/tn\/diar-abou-habibi.en-gb.html?aid=853482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diar Abou Habibi<\/a> eco-lodge, where authenticity meets comfort.<\/p>\n<p>During my two-day stay in Tozeur, I stayed at the Hotel <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ksar-rouge.tn\/fr\/\">Kzar Rouge<\/a>, a friendly hotel with a restaurant, spa and indoor and outdoor pools.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;423464,423460,423500&#8243; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Sbeitla and Its Magnificently Preserved Temples&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;sbeitla_and_its_magnificently_preserved_temples&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>On the way back to Tunis, we stopped off at Sbeitla, a major archaeological site in Tunisia&#8217;s Roman and Byzantine history. The well-preserved site is famous for its forum, featuring three temples dedicated to the Capitoline triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva). These majestic ruins bear witness to the prosperity of the ancient city of Sufetula.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;423451&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Kairouan: A Spiritual Jewel&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;kairouan_a_spiritual_jewel&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Then on to Kairouan, considered one of Islam&#8217;s holiest cities. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>I was lucky enough to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civitatis.com\/fr\/hammamet\/3-jours-djem-douz-kairuan\/?aid=101389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Mosque of Kairouan<\/a>, an architectural masterpiece erected in the 7th century. Then I explored the Aghlabid basins, ingenious water reservoirs built in the 9th century and once essential to the city&#8217;s water supply.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;0&#8243; images=&#8221;423457,423455,423447,423445,423443&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; onclick=&#8221;&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Kairouan&#8217;s medina is a veritable treasure trove of handicrafts. The Antonine Baths, majestic Roman remains, impressed me with their size and beauty. Carthage&#8217;s amphitheatre, although partially in ruins, remains a fascinating testimony to the city&#8217;s importance in antiquity.<\/p>\n<p>After this historical exploration, we headed for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civitatis.com\/fr\/tunis\/excursion-carthage-sidi-bou-said\/?aid=101389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sidi Bou Said<\/a>, a picturesque village known for its white houses with blue shutters. This place, with its narrow, winding streets, offers a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea. I was captivated by the quiet, charming atmosphere of this village, perfect for a coffee break or photo shoot.
