Initially, this area was not in our plans for several reasons, mainly because of our 2 and 4 year olds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lots of time in the car<\/li>\n<li>Unsuitable visiting hours for the little ones (sunrise \/ sunset)<\/li>\n<li>Lodges that do not accept children under 12 years old.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76412&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76466&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]But a friend of ours said: if you don&#8217;t go to Kr\u00fcger, you haven&#8217;t seen South Africa! And other friends who had been there with the children encouraged us to go anyway.<\/p>\n<p>And we did the right thing! The landscapes &#8211; and the species encountered &#8211; were simply fantastic.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76532&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;75612&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76404&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<strong>Of course, we had to adapt<\/strong>. Contrary to Gab, a member of the facebook group, we could not sleep in the Park and we could not get up at 4am to watch all the show proposed by the fauna.<\/p>\n<p>But we were still able to share memories as a family: seeing my son get excited at the sight of a baby elephant at his window and saying &#8220;Baby&#8221; or my daughter telling me that she dreamt of the Giraffe seen &#8220;in South Africa&#8221;, it is priceless!<\/p>\n<p>We haven&#8217;t been on private reserve, but I think that&#8217;s something we&#8217;ll do in the future when the children are older.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76416&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Road Panorama&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; el_id=&#8221;road_panorama&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]If there is one day of driving that I enjoyed the most &#8211; despite its length &#8211; it was the one between Phalaborwa and Kruger Gate. Define it for North Americans? A mixture of San Francisco and Los Angeles.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76522&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]San Francisco:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For its steep streets<\/li>\n<li>His life around the ocean<\/li>\n<li>An active waterfront (more beautiful than Fisherman&#8217;s Wharf)<\/li>\n<li>A beautiful culinary diversity<\/li>\n<li>The sealions<\/li>\n<li>Proximity to the vineyards (20-30 minutes)<\/li>\n<li>But also the apparent poverty in the heart of the centercity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76502&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76506&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]Los Angeles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A waterfront with Santa Monica or Malibu sides<\/li>\n<li>Villas in Beverly Hills<\/li>\n<li>Luxury cars<\/li>\n<li>A sprawling suburban area&#8230; and poor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76484&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]As for Johannesburg, a city built on the lure of profit for precious metals where living conditions are difficult (it is the largest city  around the world that is not located on the banks of a river or an ocean, which is at a high altitude and has a harsh climate).[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76658&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76668&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]What about the millions of people living in slums, or the ultra-secure, landlocked areas of the city, giving the impression that apartheid is not so far behind us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I really don&#8217;t recommend this town<\/strong>. You might say: easy when you&#8217;re from Quebec! But most of the time, the roads were a real &#8220;pool table&#8221;![\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;75592&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]But it can be surprising in some places to see this billiard table turn into a dirt road![\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Tourist buses&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; el_id=&#8221;tourist_buses&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]You won&#8217;t find a better way to explore the city than on CitySightseeing&#8217;s famous red buses.<\/p>\n<p> We used our <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"HSBC World Elite<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Mastercard<sup>&reg;<\/sup>\" href=\"\/?p=53248\">Carte Mastercard<sup>&reg;<\/sup> HSBC World Elite<sup>&reg;<\/sup><\/a> to pay no foreign currency conversion fees and benefit from a nice 20% discount via the website &#8211; by paying with a Mastercard &#8211; which was available when we visited![\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76526&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;76650&#8243; It is sometimes difficult to assess whether you are in a secure area or not. We&#8217;re not taking any chances.<\/li>\n<li>Do not get out of the car, whether the scenery is beautiful or not, if you are the only tourist in the area.<\/li>\n<li>Provide a backup wallet with some expired card s (<a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/guide\/tutorials\/travel-safety\/\">milesopedian tip<\/a>), some small bills and card  from an inactive hotel room to give if you are to be robbed.<\/li>\n<li>Never hitchhike a stranger to the side of the road.<\/li>\n<li>Know the address of the Canadian embassy or local police in case you need to contact them.<\/li>\n<li>Watch out for monkeys. As we were coming back from the Stellenbosch area to catch our flight at the airport in Cape Town, we decided to make a one-hour detour by road to the seaside so that our children could take a nap in the car on the way.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]We walked along the shantytowns for several kilometres, then we reached the seaside with magnificent landscapes&#8230; and isolated.
