I only needed the permit issued by the Tibet Autonomous Region, which my guide took care of getting me once I arrived in Kathmandu.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84823&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<strong>The best time of the year for y aller\u2009?<\/strong>  The monsoon period in the Himalayas runs from June to August. So I suggest you go there in the spring or fall to get a better temperature.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still cold in Tibet, even in summer. The atmosphere was as spiritual as it was chaotic. The shock was even more pronounced as I had just visited Doha during my stopover with Qatar Airways.<\/p>\n<p>The capital of Nepal is the starting point for several hiking trips in the mountains as well as for the conquest of Everest. I advise you to stay in the district of Thamel, where you will find very good restaurants. The heart of the city is at <strong>La Place du Darb\u00e2r<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84825&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84827&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]West of the city, I visited <strong>Swayambhunath Temple<\/strong>, also known as <em>Monkey Temple<\/em>. The views over Kathmandu are magnificent.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84829&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84831&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84833&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]Then you can&#8217;t miss it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Hindu temple Pashupatinath<\/li>\n<li>the Buddha Stupa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The latter is <strong>one of the largest Buddhist monuments in Asia<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84835&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Lhasa&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;lhasa&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]We took a flight with Air China to Lhasa.<\/p>\n<p>This flight crosses almost the entire Himalayas! For an incomparable view, ask for a window seat &#8211; <strong>on the left side of the plane<\/strong> -, i.e. the &#8220;\u2009A\u2009&#8221; seat.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway through my flight, from my porthole, I was able to briefly see Everest through the cloud mass. It is also possible to take a plane ride around Everest with some agencies in Kathmandu.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84837&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]When we arrived in Lhasa, we all <strong>immediately felt the effects of the altitude<\/strong>. Just getting up one floor in the hotel was a very physically demanding task. The city is located in the heart of the Tibetan plateau, 3650 meters (12\u2009000 feet) above sea level.<\/p>\n<p>This was our base for the next four days as it was <strong>essential to acclimatize ourselves<\/strong> before continuing the journey.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84839&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]I went for a walk in the Barkhor district, which leads to the <strong>Jokhang monastery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This pilgrimage site is considered the spiritual center of Tibet. You could see people praying right in the middle of the street. There is a separate entrance for tourists where it is possible to attend the ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>Photos weren&#8217;t allowed inside.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84841&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84843&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]Then we visited <strong>the monastery of Sera<\/strong>, a school for monks.<\/p>\n<p>Although their classes and meditation periods are not open to the public, the monks conduct their discussions and debates in the outer courtyard.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84845&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84847&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84849&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]On the outskirts of Lhasa, there are many monasteries. One of the oldest is that of <strong>Ganden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It is located on top of a hill and offers a breathtaking view. For those who have already acclimatised to the altitude, it is possible to climb an adjacent hill for a magnificent panorama of Ganden.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84851&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84853&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84855&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]It was one of the few temples where it was possible to take pictures inside.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84857&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84859&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84861&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]I loved walking around the monastery for the views of the valley.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84863&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84865&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]Finally, to complete the stay in Lhasa, we visited <strong>the Potala Palace<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This fortress was the home of the Dalai Lama and the seat of the Tibetan government until the 1959 rebellion, when Tibet lost its sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This monument captured me by its grandeur<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84867&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84869&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84871&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Gyants\u00e9&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;gyants_&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]Then we went on a quest for the famous <strong>Tibetan Panoramas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The restrictions and difficulty in obtaining a permit meant that there were no crowds on site. As a result, I was able to enjoy these incredible landscapes almost alone. We were able to stop several times in order to <strong>take nature&#8217;s pulse without being disturbed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It was priceless.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84873&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84875&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84877&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]In Gyants\u00e9, a city located at the center of Tibet, we visited<strong> the monastery of Palcho<\/strong> which shelters the <em>kumbum<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The latter is the largest of the stupas in Tibet.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84879&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84881&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]According to the rites of many religions, moving around it clockwise promotes good karma.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84883&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Everest&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;everest&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]The further west you went, the more rural it became.<\/p>\n<p>The places where we stayed had<strong>very basic facilities<\/strong>; there is nothing luxurious about a trip to Tibet.<\/p>\n<p>Yak is everywhere and is at the center of Tibetan cuisine. It was common to warm up with yak butter tea![\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84885&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]I&#8217;ve always had a weakness for wide open spaces because of the sense of freedom they give me.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>roadtrip<\/em> in this region is certainly not boring![\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84887&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]To conclude our trip, we arrived at the <strong>Rongbuk<\/strong> monastery, located next to a base camp of Everest, summit of the world.<\/p>\n<p>There are two separate base camps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The first one is in Nepal<\/strong>, on the south side of the mountain. It is the most popular choice for climbing Everest. To reach it, you must first pass through the town of Lukla, then undertake a trek of about ten days.<\/p>\n<p>However, we opted for <strong>the second camp,<\/strong> <strong>erived on Tibetan soil<\/strong>, on the northern slope of the mountain. Much easier to access than the first one, it was possible to get there entirely by car. <strong>We could also see Everest better<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>**It should be noted that the Tibetan base camp has been closed since February 2019 due to over-tourism. You can still go to Rongbuk monastery and see Everest.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84889&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84891&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84893&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]This is the highest place I have ever set foot in my life (5200 meters).<\/p>\n<p>I thought my body had acclimated well since we left Lhasa, but <strong>the dizziness hit me<\/strong> hard. Acute mountain sickness can cause cerebral edema. So this is not to be taken lightly.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, I had the necessary medication with me and the treatment worked. Otherwise, we would have had to descend to a lower altitude.<\/p>\n<p>Even the fittest members of our group felt the effects of altitude to varying degrees. As half of us wanted to take up a trekking challenge, our guide organized a small 7-kilometer trek on a difference in altitude of no more than 200 meters.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, some hikers, who had already run marathons, told me that they had experienced the most demanding two hours of walking in their lives.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84895&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]Finally, we had to take the <em>Friendship Highway <\/em> back to Nepal<em>. <\/em> The planned route was to take us to Kathmandu. Due to a major earthquake and landslide that occurred while I was in Tibet, the <em>Friendship Highway<\/em> was destroyed for several kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>The only way to get through the disaster was to fly over it in a helicopter.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84897&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]So I used the trip interruption insurance from the <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"National Bank's World Mastercard\" href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/world-mastercard-from-national-bank\/\" >National Bank World Mastercard<\/a>. These are constantly being changed, so I can hardly advise you on this. There was a time when it was only possible to visit them if you were part of a group of at least four people of the same nationality, for example. In my case, I simply had to be part of a group from a recognized agency.<\/p>\n<p>It is imperative to <strong>have a special permit to visit this region<\/strong>, so I advise you not to attempt this trip independently.<\/p>\n<p>You can still do it alone or with one other person, as long as you are accompanied by an authorized driver-guide to facilitate your passage through the many checkpoints. On the road, we often had to stop to provide our itinerary and visitor&#8217;s permit.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;84899&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; add_caption=&#8221;yes&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]If you&#8217;re just planning to visit Lhasa, there&#8217;s an exception to the rule. You will still need to have a guide with you at all times, but it is not necessary to have a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Organized groups (Gadventures, Intrepid Travel, Wind Horse Travel) will however cost you less than private tours.<\/p>\n<p>These three companies still offer to this day the itinerary that I travelled through their catalogue. They also offer tours departing from Beijing, according to your preferences. Remember that <em>Gadventures<\/em> allows you to earn <strong>a 2.5% discount<\/strong> depending on promotions through <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"Rakuten\" href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/rakuten\/\" >Rakuten.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the flight to Kathmandu, it is possible to use <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reward-program\/aeroplan\/\">Aeroplan<\/a> miles on the YUL-IST-KTM route with Turkish Airlines to avoid Carrier surcharges  A return economy class round trip will cost you 100\u2009000 Aeroplan Miles.<\/p>\n<p>If your itinerary starts in Beijing, you will only pay 75\u2009000 Aeroplan Miles to get there. It&#8217;s the same price in miles to get to Lhasa directly!<\/p>\n<p>For those who would like to try the Qsuites cabin of Qatar Airways, it is possible to do so on the first segment of the YUL-DOH-KTM route.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you will be able to transfer <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reward-program\/membership-rewards-american-express\/\">American Express Membership
