And you can see that from Montreal, a flight of this type is operated by the Chinese national airline!<\/p>\n<h2>Air China: Beijing &#8211; Havana via Montreal<\/h2>\n<p>Some time ago, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/?p=291\">I announced the new direct flight between Montreal and Beijing<\/a> on Air China (Star Alliance).<\/p>\n<p>This is great news for the Montreal economy and this flight seems to be working very well. There is also talk of opening a new direct flight to China to Shanghai.<\/p>\n<p>But in reality, it was a desire of the Chinese government <strong>to open a line to Havana in Cuba<\/strong> using&#8230; the 5th Freedom Air!<\/p>\n<h2>Other flights available in Canada under the 5th Freedom of the Air rule<\/h2>\n<p>There are a few flights operated in Canada by foreign airlines under the 5th Freedom of the Air rule:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Montreal (YUL) to Havana (HAV) &#8211; Air China<\/li>\n<li>Toronto (YYZ) to New York (JFK) = TAM Airlines<\/li>\n<li>Toronto (YYZ) to Amsterdam (AMS) &#8211; Jet Airways<\/li>\n<li>Vancouver (YVR) to New York (JFK) &#8211; Cathay Pacific<\/li>\n<li>Vancouver (YVR) to New York (JFK) &#8211; Philippine Airlines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I would say that the most coveted one for aviation enthusiasts like me is the Cathay Pacific flight from Vancouver to New York.<\/p>\n<p>It can be booked with British Airways Executive Club miles and is a unique opportunity to travel in unparalleled comfort, especially in business or first class on this great Asian airline.<\/p>\n<p>Just as the Air China flight from Montreal to Havana could be booked with Aeroplan miles&#8230; if Aeroplan added Cuba to its list of destinations available for online booking.<\/p>\n<h2>The other freedoms of the air<\/h2>\n<p>The 5th freedom of the air is the most famous, because it is the one that goes beyond the common rules! But there are 9 in all. An infographic from Air France on the subject is very well done to understand <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.icao.int\/Pages\/freedomsAir.aspx\">these 9 freedoms<\/a>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Freedoms_of_the_Air_Diagram.png\" alt=\"Freedoms of the Air Diagram\" width=\"375\" height=\"656\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>First freedom of the air:<\/strong> right for a carrier of a State to fly over the territory of another State without landing.<\/p>\n<p>Example: Air Canada flies over the United States on a Montreal-Mexico flight<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second freedom of the air:<\/strong> right to make technical stops.
