Example with my next trip.<\/p>\n<p>\n<!--more-->\n<\/p>\n<h2>The rules on mini world tours<\/h2>\n<p>Behind the expression &#8220;mini-tour du monde&#8221; lies in fact an itinerary that maximizes the rules of the Aeroplan program and can be summed up in one sentence: a <strong>round trip<\/strong> to one or more <strong>continents<\/strong> with <strong>2 stops<\/strong> and one <strong>destination<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>[vc_message color=&#8221;info&#8221;]A <strong>stopover<\/strong> <em>lasts<\/em> more than 24 hours, as opposed to a <strong>layover<\/strong> <em> lasting<\/em> less than 24 hours.[\/vc_message]<\/p>\n<p>[vc_message color=&#8221;info&#8221;]We can think of the <strong>open jaw<\/strong> as <em>a route with a gap<\/em>, for example, an outbound trip from Montreal to Paris and a return trip from Barcelona to Montreal. The Paris-Barcelona trip is not included in the ticket.[\/vc_message]<\/p>\n<p>In detail, it is an award ticket that includes the following conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s a <strong>round trip<\/strong> (you can&#8217;t make a stop on an award ticket that contains only a <strong>one-way<\/strong> trip)<\/li>\n<li>You can make up to two stops <strong>or<\/strong> one stop and one open route<\/li>\n<li>The itinerary must be at least between <strong>two continents<\/strong> (intercontinental flight), e.g. North America to Europe or North America to Asia via Europe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other rules apply on flights <strong>within<\/strong> Canada and <strong>to<\/strong> the USA (one stop or one open leg) or flights <strong>from<\/strong> Canada or the USA <strong>to<\/strong> Hawaii, Central America and Puerto Rico: 2 stops\/ 1 stop and one stopover if the route contains only Air Canada flights or 1 stop \/ 1 open leg if one of the flights is operated by a <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/ressources-utiles\/compagnies-aeriennes\/star-alliance\">Star Alliance<\/a> partner).<\/p>\n<h2>Example of a route between Montreal and Beirut<\/h2>\n<p>The cost in miles from Montreal to Beirut (&#8220;Middle East and North Africa&#8221; region according to theAeroplan price list) is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aeroplan.com\/use-your-miles\/flight-rewards-chart\">165,000 miles<\/a> round trip in Business class.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped over in <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reviews\/flights\/flight-business-class-montreal-istanbul-turkish-airlines\/\">Istanbul<\/a> several times but never for more than 24 hours, so we just had a glimpse of this city full of history. We wanted to take the opportunity to visit another city in the region and chose Beirut. The latter being smaller, it allowed us to visit two cities without overloading ourselves.<\/p>\n<h3>Montreal &#8211; Istanbul via Boston: stop 1 and stop 2<\/h3>\n<p>There&#8217;s a direct flight from Montreal but availability wasn&#8217;t there. Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/academie\/outils\/flightconnections-com\/\">FlightConnections<\/a>, I can see that there are flights to quite a few cities in the USA from Turkey. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27846\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/tk-flight-connection.png\" alt=\"tk flight connection\" width=\"2032\" height=\"1022\"><\/p>\n<p>And bingo, Boston has two seats in business class with very minimal taxes ($14).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-27847 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bos-ist.png\" alt=\"bos ist\" width=\"1397\" height=\"558\"><\/p>\n<p>The flight from Montreal to Boston isn&#8217;t hard to find, in fact it&#8217;s our first stop, so we take the opportunity to catch a Red Sox game at the famous Fenway Stadium. This is an economy flight because the aircraft serving this route does not contain a business cabin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27845\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/yul-bos.png\" alt=\"yul bos\" width=\"1408\" height=\"386\"><\/p>\n<h3>Istanbul &#8211; Beirut: from Stop 2 to Destination<\/h3>\n<p>The trip from Istanbul (the second stop) to Beirut (the destination) is also operated by Turkish Airlines, availability is not a problem and taxes are low here too ($40).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27844\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ist-bey.png\" alt=\"ist bey\" width=\"1398\" height=\"428\"><\/p>\n<h3>Beirut &#8211; Montreal via Dubovnik and Paris: from destination to departure city with 2 long stopovers<\/h3>\n<p>The return journey will be more sporting, as no flights are found by the online site&#8217;s search engine. I have to search by segment and most routes go through Germany so with Lufthansa <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/programmes-de-fidelite\/aeriens\/aeroplan\/compagnies-surcharge-transporteur-programme-aeroplan\/\">charging big surcharges<\/a>. If I have to pay taxes, I&#8217;d rather go through Paris to see the family on the way. I find this itinerary a breeze: <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27843\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/bey-ath-cdg.png\" alt=\"bey ath cdg\" width=\"1392\" height=\"998\"><\/p>\n<p>It can be scary but for an aviation geek like me, I am curious to know two new companies: Aegean Airlines and Croatia Airlines and with a 7 hours connection in Dubrovnik I hope to have a glimpse of this famous city.<\/p>\n<p>The last segment is a flight between Paris and Montreal, respecting the rule of one stop of less than 24 hours (connection instead of a stopover), as I&#8217;ve already used up my two stops in addition to my destination (Boston = Stop 1 \/ Istanbul = Stop 2 \/ Beirut = Destination).<\/p>\n<p>This flight is done the next day, I will be able to spend the evening at my brother&#8217;s in Paris.
