Since reward points can be collected over months or even years, it would be a real shame to lose them simply because they’ve expired<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To avoid this, it’s essential to know the rules governing the validity of points and miles<\/strong> in rewards programs. In addition, practical tools are available to help you manage your points.<\/p>\n

As a general rule, bank programs do not allow points to expire<\/strong> as long as the credit card account remains active.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you want to close a card<\/a> and keep the points for future use.<\/p>\n

Of course, if you close a credit card account, the points attached to that account will be lost (they can usually be used within 90 days of closing the account, but the process will be more complicated).<\/p>\n

Here are a few tips on how to keep your points when closing cards with the major programs.<\/p>\n

It is generally not possible to transfer points between spouses. This is not a way to keep your points after closing a card.<\/p>\n

As long as a card is active, your<\/strong> Membership Rewards Points do not expire<\/strong>. Once the card is closed, the points disappear immediately.<\/p>\n

If you need to close a card and still have Membership Rewards points<\/a> left in your account, you can keep them with this trick if you have more than one card. Contact American Express (by phone or chat<\/a>) and ask the agent to combine your Membership Rewards points into one account.<\/p>\n

Once your accounts are combined, you will see your points appear in a main account: it will say that “your loyalty information is linked to your card ending in…”.<\/p>\n

If you cancel a card (even the main card on which your points are displayed), the points will remain in the same points account: another linked card will become the main card.<\/p>\n

If you don’t use your Membership Rewards points before closing your card or combine them with another account, they will disappear immediately<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As of 2021, Scotiabank’s in-house program, Scotia Rewards, no longer exists. The bank is now a partner of Scene+<\/a>, an external rewards program. Refer to the Scene+ section below for rules on expiry of these points.<\/p>\n

However, as long as a credit or debit card linked to your Scene+ account is active, your Scene+ points do not expire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If you wish to cancel a card and still keep your BMO Rewards<\/a> points, you will need to apply for another card BEFORE closing your account. We suggest that you apply for a no-fee card, such as the BMO eclipse rise Visa* Card<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Once you receive your new card, you can call BMO and ask to link it to your existing BMO Rewards points account. Only then will you be able to cancel your other BMO Rewards card.<\/p>\n

As long as a credit card linked to your account is active, your NBC Rewards points will not expire<\/strong>. Once the card is closed, you have 12 months to use the points.<\/p>\n

If you wish to close a NBC \u00c0 la carte Rewards<\/a> card and still keep your points, you can switch to a less expensive card. However, no card associated with NBC Rewards has no annual fee. In addition, you will not be eligible for a new welcome bonus for the next 24 months. <\/p>\n

In our opinion, it’s best to maintain your National Bank World Elite Mastercard<\/a> active, taking advantage of its various benefits every year<\/a>.<\/p>\n
