Effective March 29, 2022, the Marriott Bonvoy program switched to a dynamic chart<\/a>. As a result, hotel point rates now closely track cash rates.<\/p>\n

In addition, 200 Marriott Bonvoy hotels<\/a> now require more points.<\/p>\n

But because of that, a hotel booked on points before March 29, 2022, may cost less<\/strong>. And that’s what happened to several people in our Facebook group<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There is an easy way to update a reservation and have the points refunded. This avoids cancelling your reservation and making a new one with the new rate.<\/p>\n

This method is also valid for rates paid in cash<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Here’s how, step by step.<\/p>\n

A few weeks ago, I booked a 5-night stay with my points at Delta Hotels Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort<\/a>. The initial reservation was 160,000 points. I did the trick of updating my reservation during the evening of March 29 and was able to get my reservation at 156,000 points.<\/p>\n

Then, on the morning of March 30, I checked again and the new pricing was at 155,000 points<\/strong>! Here’s how I was able to save another 1,000 points.<\/p>\n

First, go to your Marriott Bonvoy profile<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Click on“My Trips<\/strong>” at the top right.<\/p>\n

Find your reservation made with points and click on“View\/Edit<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

In the details of your room, click on“Edit room<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

You will find yourself on the page of the rooms and their rates. The system shows you the same equivalent room, with the new rate.<\/p>\n

If the point cost has increased, tough luck. Close the reservation and do nothing.<\/p>\n

Considering my room was originally 156,000 points and now it’s 155,000 points, that’s perfect! The rate has dropped by 1,000 points so I want to get it at that price.<\/p>\n

Click on“Update<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

A page opens and shows you the summary of changes.<\/p>\n

The top section shows that my reservation will be at 155,000 points.<\/p>\n

Then the bottom section shows that 1,000 points will be put into my Marriott Bonvoy account.<\/p>\n

Click“Yes<\/strong>” to confirm.<\/p>\n

Then, the reservation is updated and the difference in points is instantly credited<\/strong> to your account. Congratulations! You now have more points!<\/p>\n
