You might be tempted to pay for everything with the same card, just to make sure you&#8217;re covered&#8230; Think again.<\/p>\n<p>You need to be familiar with the fine print of credit card insurance policies to know which card to use to pay for which expense. <strong>Especially when you use miles or points to pay for your trip.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Insure your airline ticket booked with Aeroplan points&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;insure_your_airline_ticket_booked_with_aeroplan_points&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p>The best way to insure a trip paid for with Aeroplan points is to book it with an Aeroplan credit card that offers travel insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, other &#8220;non-Aeroplan&#8221; credit cards generally require that the entire air ticket be paid for with the credit card. This assumes that points have not been used.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, when I booked my plane tickets, I had 3 <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reward-program\/aeroplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aeroplan-affiliated<\/a> credit cards in my wallet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a title=\"American Express<sup>&reg;<\/sup>* Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Reserve Card\" href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/amex-aeroplan-reserve\/\" rel=\"noindex\">American Express<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup>* Reserve Card<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The <a title=\"TD<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Visa Infinite* Card\" href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-card\/\" rel=\"noindex\">TD<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Visa Infinite* Card<\/a><\/li>\n<li>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/credit-cards\/american-express-aeroplan-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American <sup>Express<sup>&reg;<\/sup><\/sup><sup>Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup>*<\/sup> Card<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"wpb_content_element wpb_miles_element\"><\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p>I usually pay for my Aeroplan expenses with the <a title=\"American Express<sup>&reg;<\/sup>* Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Reserve Card\" href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/amex-aeroplan-reserve\/\" rel=\"noindex\">American Express<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Aeroplan<sup>MD<\/sup>* Reserve Card Express<sup>MD<\/sup><\/a>. It provides $1,000 coverage for flight <strong>and<\/strong> baggage delays.<\/p>\n<p>This time, however, my choice fell on the <a title=\"TD<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Visa Infinite* Card\" href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-card\/\" rel=\"noindex\">TD<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Visa Infinite* Card<\/a>. It offers $500 for flight delays <strong>and<\/strong> $1,000 per person for baggage delays.<\/p>\n<p>Why did I choose this card? The lure of profit perhaps: by paying for my trip with this card (in this case, the Aeroplan taxes), I earned <strong>1.5 Aeroplan points<\/strong> per dollar spent. This would have been &#8220;only&#8221; <strong>1.25 points<\/strong> with the Amex.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But above all, it&#8217;s an opportunity for me to put the insurance provided by TD Bank to the test. <\/strong>In fact, it recently became my main bank!<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"wpb_content_element wpb_miles_element\"><\/div>[vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Insured transportation&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;insured_transportation&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p>Cards offering travel insurance <strong>and<\/strong> affiliated with the Aeroplan program provide coverage when travel expenses are paid with Aeroplan points.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the rules for the <a title=\"TD<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Visa Infinite* Card\" href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-card\/\" rel=\"noindex\">TD<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Visa Infinite* Card<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;190696&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Expenses covered&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;expenses_covered&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdcanadatrust.com\/francais\/document\/PDF\/tdvisa\/AeroplanInfiniteAgreement_533811.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TD Visa Infinite Aeroplan Card insurance<\/a> covers both baggage delay and flight delay.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;53899&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p>In my case, my luggage was delivered late, but within 6 hours. So only flight delay insurance will apply, up to a limit of $500.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Insurance coverage conditions&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;insurance_coverage_conditions&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdcanadatrust.com\/francais\/document\/PDF\/tdvisa\/AeroplanInfiniteAgreement_533811.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card brochure<\/a> details the conditions under which expenses are covered by the card&#8217;s insurance, provided by Allianz.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;53900&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_shadow&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p>My delay was a mixture of conditions 1 and 2. There was an equipment failure (frozen toilets) on the common carrier (Air Canada). This was caused by the aircraft being parked on the tarmac overnight. Indeed, the weather conditions were violent, with temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;The claims procedure&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;the_claims_procedure&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>In order to be compensated, you must <strong>record all covered expenses on the card and keep all receipts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I used my <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/credit-cards\/td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-card\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><sup>TD<sup>&reg;<\/sup><\/sup> <sup>Aeroplan<sup>&reg;<\/sup><\/sup> Visa Infinite* Card<\/a> to pay&nbsp;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cabs from the airport to the hotel and back<\/li>\n<li>The hotel in San Francisco<\/li>\n<li>Living expenses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is then necessary to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allianz-assistance.ca\/fr_CA.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submit a claim online on the Allianz website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Insuring your car rental&#8221; google_fonts=&#8221;&#8221; el_id=&#8221;insuring_your_car_rental&#8221;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p>For the car rental, I chose another card: the <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/credit-cards\/bmo-ascend-world-elite-mastercard\/\">BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard<\/a>. It offers one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/personal-finance\/insurance\/theft-damage-car-rental-credit-cards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best rental car insurance coverages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, with all travel expenses such as car rentals, <strong>you earn 5 points per dollar spent<\/strong>. Enough to cover foreign exchange fees of 2.5%!<\/p>\n<p>A discount is also available with contract number <strong>3717122<\/strong> (National Car Rental) or <strong>7014883<\/strong> (Alamo Rent A Car).
