In Quebec and Eastern Ontario, the most widely used public electric charging stations are those of Circuit \u00c9lectrique<\/a> and Flo<\/a>. There is also the Petro-Canada<\/a> network of rapid electric charging stations along the Trans-Canada Highway.<\/p>\n

My colleague Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric explains that certain types of purchases in stores<\/a> earn extra points or cash back. This depends on the Merchant Category Code<\/strong> (C C C) or the Merchant Category Code<\/em> (M C C).<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text el_class=”checkmarks”]For electric charging stations<\/strong>, the CCC created by Visa and Mastercard is 5552 – Electric vehicle charging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

To determine the category of your charging transaction, contact your financial institution. Or, go to the Developer Tool in your browser to find out.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”185491″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text el_class=”checkmarks”]For example, I used the TDMD<\/sup> AeroplanMD<\/sup> Visa Infinite* Card<\/a> at a Petro-Canada<\/a> electric charging station<\/strong> in Ontario. The CCC code for this transaction is 5552 – Electric vehicle charging<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Even though Petro-Canada’s main business is sellinggasoline<\/a> (code 5541).[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”185485″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Confusion among issuers and businesses” el_id=”confusion_among_issuers_and_businesses”][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”checkmarks”]<\/p>\n

This merchant category code 5552 is very recent. This causes great differences in its application at businesses connected to Visa<\/a>, Mastercard<\/a> and American Express<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With the TDMD<\/sup> AeroplanMD<\/sup> Visa Infinite* Card,<\/a> you earn 1.5 points per dollar on all eligible gasoline purchases. However, this Petro-Canada 5552 refill is classified as “Other”. As a result, I only got 1 point per dollar for this charge.<\/p>\n

As a side note, I even got a $5 promotional credit<\/a> for any purchase (reloading my Circuit \u00c9lectrique account) of $10 or more during the last American Express Shop Small<\/a> promotion! This is the equivalent of 31 kWh of free energy (or about 170 kilometres with my battery type), at a 100 kWh Circuit \u00c9lectrique fast charging station.<\/p>\n

Since points and rewards vary from card to card and issuer to issuer, the best way is to do your own testing at electric charging stations<\/strong> and with your credit card.<\/p>\n
