I consider that I am enjoying life<\/strong> when I explore the planet. For me, this means going on an expedition to Antarctica<\/a>, visiting the 7 Wonders of the World<\/a>, staying in a villa on stilts in the Maldives<\/a> or sleeping in a suite 40,000 feet<\/a> in the air with my little family.<\/p>\n

For another person, enjoying life may be defined as going to the best restaurants every weekend or retreating to the family cottage.<\/p>\n

Each individual has their own priorities<\/strong> and their own definition of<\/strong> carpe diem<\/em>.<\/p>\n

These are the first tips for everyone aiming for the FIRE<\/strong><\/a> movement.<\/p>\n

The first step is to establish a budget<\/a> to determine whether you have any phantom expenses<\/strong>; if so, we’ll try to eliminate them so that we can save everywhere on a daily basis<\/a>!<\/p>\n

In general, it is much easier to reduce expenses<\/strong> than to increase income.<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_message]It’s easier to save when your income is high, but you have to remember that your expenses (lifestyle) are also higher.[\/vc_message]

Then, if possible, find other ways to increase your income<\/strong> to save more.<\/p>\n

For example, you could sign up to be an Uber driver or Uber Eats<\/a> delivery person. Then, make your home more profitable by renting out unused rooms to roommates or on AirBnb<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, since we have to spend money to live the life we want, we must try tomaximize the return on our spending<\/strong>. In fact, according to my definition of enjoying life, it’s very expensive (plus we’re aiming for financial freedom with the FIRE movement<\/a>).<\/p>\n

This is where credit cards and points come into play.<\/p>\n

Indeed, it is often said that you travel for free<\/strong> (or almost free) with points<\/strong>, but you could also see it this way: you save money on something you would otherwise pay for. As a result, there is more cash left in the account for other projects or for the quest for FIRE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When you buy a plane ticket with Aeroplan<\/a> points, it’s because your points are valued better<\/strong> the cash price<\/a>. So every time I use reward points, I deposit the equivalent amount in savings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

However, I used this money, which I got almost for free, in the same way as if I had earned it in wages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Indeed, I wasn’t buying an overpriced sweater at GAP, telling myself it was “free”, since I’m using my gift cards to pay the bill.<\/p>\n

I shop for what I need, at the cost that suits me<\/strong>, and then I simply pay with cash or a gift card.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”179895″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_rounded”][vc_column_text el_class=”checkmarks”]<\/p>\n

Secondly, credit card<\/a> rewards points<\/a> also allow us to afford luxuries<\/strong> on a budget and without cutting into<\/strong> our FIRE<\/strong> plans.<\/p>\n

For example, flying first class with Emirates<\/a> or spending a week on a water villa in the Maldives<\/a> while keeping my standard savings rate!<\/p>\n

It’s also thanks to a good credit card strategy<\/a> that allows us to travel as a family, several times a year, without undermining the wealth accumulation we need to be financially free<\/a> while our children are still in elementary school.<\/p>\n

In my early travels, I spent a lot of time in South East Asia<\/strong>. As a university student, I had several months’ vacation and a round-trip plane ticket paid for entirely with Aeroplan<\/a> points. While there, I was able to get by on less than $40-50<\/strong> a day; with the hotel room, my meals and my activities!<\/p>\n

So taking the less expensive trips<\/a> at that point in my life allowed me to save more money<\/strong> in my early 20s.<\/p>\n

So, I started by touring Asia<\/strong> before transitioning to places like Patagonia<\/a> andEgypt<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When you add the points into the equation, I could save just as much<\/strong> by doing more unique trips like the Galapagos<\/a> or Antarctica<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Credit card<\/a> rewards points<\/a> have been a great help in offsetting<\/strong> the cost of these more expensive trips. Travel hacking<\/em><\/strong> is a marathon<\/a>; the more I mastered the points programs<\/a>, the easier it was to earn<\/a> them!<\/p>\n

I know people with very high incomes who have difficulty<\/strong> putting money into their RRSPs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I also know people with salaries under $35,000<\/strong> who have been around the world<\/strong> and are on the right path to a traditional FIRE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Enjoying life while aiming FIRE<\/strong>it’s possible, but it’s going to require an effort;<\/strong>no matter what your income, credit cards and rewards points can help you live the life we want or even get richer using points for investing<\/a> or for optimizing our tax return<\/a> and government subsidies!<\/p>\n
