Several points emerged:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 out of 4 Canadians (22.3 million) admitted using their credit cards to earn points.<\/li>\n<li>With an average expenditure of $3,735 per person, this represents <strong>$83.2 billion<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, there are also points earned through means other than <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/best-credit-cards-in-canada\/\">credit card<\/a> spending. For example, when:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You stay in a hotel<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/guide\/tutorials\/earn-aeroplan-points-flights\/\">travelling with an airline<\/a><\/li>\n<li>You do your <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/best-credit-cards-in-canada\/grocery\/\">grocery<\/a> shopping<\/li>\n<li>You buy <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/guide\/strategy\/how-to-save-home-improvements-credit-cards\/\">DIY materials<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each individual therefore holds a <strong>heritage of points<\/strong> that are worth something. Hence the question in today&#8217;s article: what happens to your loyalty points when you <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/guide\/tutorials\/bereavement-family-urgency-fares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">die<\/a>? The rules vary depending on each rewards program.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;106655&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Aeroplan&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; el_id=&#8221;aeroplan&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reward-program\/aeroplan\/\">Aeroplan<\/a>&#8216;s side, it is possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aircanada.com\/ca\/fr\/aco\/home\/aeroplan\/your-aeroplan\/estate-policy.html#\/home:\">transfer points<\/a> from the deceased member&#8217;s account. To do so, you will need to send various information <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"mailto:estate.solution@aeroplan.com\">by email<\/a> to Aeroplan:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>the deceased member&#8217;s Aeroplan account number (if known);<\/li>\n<li>the member&#8217;s first and last name;<\/li>\n<li>the member&#8217;s full address, including postal code;<\/li>\n<li>the member&#8217;s telephone numbers (home and cell phone);<\/li>\n<li>a scanned copy of the death certificate;<\/li>\n<li>a scanned copy of the part of the will where the beneficiaries are named (only this section is required);<\/li>\n<li>an attestation signed by each beneficiary who wishes to waive his or her share of miles, if applicable (points will be divided equally among all beneficiaries unless some of them waive in writing, in which case the miles will be divided among the other beneficiaries).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is no <strong>charge for this type of transfer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"wpb_content_element wpb_miles_element\">\t\t<div\n\t\t\t\tdata-template='s-h'\n\t\t\t\tdata-post_type='page'\n\t\t\t\tdata-per_page='4'\n\t\t\t\tclass='deferred_container--preload container_page container_template--s-h container_count--1'\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-tag=\"page_id\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-post_ids=\"90566\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t<article class=\"post-preview\">\n\t<div class=\"post-preview-thumbnail\">\n\t\t<div class=\"shimmer shimmer-image\"><\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"post-preview-content\">\n\t\t<div class=\"simmer-bar-group\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"shimmer shimmer-bar\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"shimmer shimmer-bar\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/article>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;AIR MILES&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; el_id=&#8221;air_miles&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>In the event of death, AIR MILES miles can be transferred by completing the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airmiles.ca\/content\/dam\/airmiles\/ca\/fr\/get-help\/transferer-milles\/Formulaire_de_succession_AIR_MILES_MD_01082023.pdf\">estate form<\/a> and sending the following documents by e-mail:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provincial death certificate, or<\/li>\n<li>Funeral parlour declaration of death<\/li>\n<li>If the transfer of miles exceeds 20,000, additional documentation may be required, such as a certificate appointing an estate administrator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airmiles.ca\/fr\/conditions-generales.html\">the terms and conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In case of divorce or relationship breakdown, death, emigration from Canada, duplication error, or with our authorization, you may with our prior consent and upon proper proof and payment of such fees as we may in our discretion impose from time to time, merge your Collector Number with the Collector Number of a family member or member of your household.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>You can email this to <a href=\"mailto:care@airmiles.ca\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">care@airmiles.ca<\/a> or fax it to 1-888-378-2332.<\/p>\n<p>There is <strong>no charge<\/strong> for this type of transfer.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;TD Reward Points&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; el_id=&#8221;td_reward_points&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>If a beneficiary is designated&nbsp;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the Beneficiary notifies TD of the Primary Cardholder&#8217;s death within one year of the death, the Beneficiary will have the opportunity to redeem <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reward-program\/td-rewards\/\">TD Rewards points<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If the Beneficiary notifies TD of the Cardholder&#8217;s death more than one year after the date of death, TD Rewards points will no longer be redeemable, will expire and will be cancelled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The beneficiary should contact them at <strong>1-888-315-0603<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Upon the death of the Primary Cardholder, additional documentation will be required to facilitate the redemption of TD Rewards points.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"wpb_content_element wpb_miles_element\">\t\t<div\n\t\t\t\tdata-template='s-h'\n\t\t\t\tdata-post_type='post'\n\t\t\t\tdata-per_page='4'\n\t\t\t\tclass='deferred_container--preload container_post container_template--s-h container_count--1'\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-tag=\"post_id\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tdata-post_ids=\"177378\"\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t<article class=\"post-preview\">\n\t<div class=\"post-preview-thumbnail\">\n\t\t<div class=\"shimmer shimmer-image\"><\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"post-preview-content\">\n\t\t<div class=\"simmer-bar-group\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"shimmer shimmer-bar\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"shimmer shimmer-bar\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/article>\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;CIBC Aventura Points&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; el_id=&#8221;hsbc_rewards_points&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>In the event of the death of the principal cardholder at <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reward-program\/hsbc-rewards\/\">HSBC Rewards<\/a>Program membership will be terminated, and points accumulated in the rewards account may be redeemed by the primary cardholder&#8217;s estate for a period of 90 days, provided the necessary documents are submitted.<\/p>\n<p>Points not used within this period will be automatically cancelled and cannot be redeemed, transferred or converted thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"wpb_content_element wpb_miles_element\"><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;WestJet Rewards&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; el_id=&#8221;westjet_rewards&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>When a deceased <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reward-program\/westjet-rewards\/\">WestJet Rewards<\/a> member is reported to WestJet, the membership will be cancelled and the account closed. Accumulated WestJet dollars can be used by the member&#8217;s estate.<\/p>\n<p>WestJet may request the following documents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Copy of death certificate.<\/li>\n<li>Proof from the executor or administrator of the estate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The executor must indicate the beneficiary of the dollars and provide the account number, or a new account can be opened for the beneficiary. WestJet is not responsible for the tax implications of this estate. Dollars unclaimed after 120 months from the closing of the deceased member&#8217;s account will be cancelled and unusable. WestJet dollars cannot be converted to cash.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;106652&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; style=&#8221;vc_box_rounded&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;American Express&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; el_id=&#8221;american_express&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/offers\/cards\/american-express-welcome-offers\/\">American Express Canada<\/a>, you will first have to notify them of the death by calling 1-800-263-1616. The account will then be cancelled and the beneficiary will be able to take possession of it and the available <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reward-program\/membership-rewards-american-express\/\">membership rewards points<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"wpb_content_element wpb_miles_element\"><\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=&#8221;Marriott Bonvoy&#8221; font_container=&#8221;tag:h3|text_align:left&#8221; el_id=&#8221;marriott_bonvoy&#8221;][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;checkmarks&#8221;]<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marriott.fr\/loyalty\/terms\/default.mi\">According to the terms and conditions of<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/reward-program\/marriott-bonvoy\/\">Marriott Bonvoy<\/a> program, it is possible to transfer points to the beneficiary&#8217;s account. However, other benefits such as Elite night credits or <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/guide\/tutorials\/marriott-bonvoy-elite-status-benefits\/\">status<\/a> are not transferable.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In the event of a Member\u2019s death, the Company may, in its sole discretion, allow unredeemed Points from the deceased Member\u2019s Account to be transferred to a family member or a friend who is an active Member upon the Company\u2019s receipt and review of all requested documentation and communications.
