However, it has to be said that it is<strong>much easier and often more efficient to do so via your credit card issuer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>3 situations to challenge a transaction<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/visa-amex-mastercard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24234 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/visa-amex-mastercard.jpg\" alt=\"amex mastercard visa\" width=\"284\" height=\"178\"><\/a>You can legitimately challenge a transaction in one of these 3 main scenarios:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A fraudulent transaction (e.g. as a result of theft);<\/li>\n<li>A duplicate transaction (when there was only one purchase);<\/li>\n<li>A good or service not received.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over the past few years, I have needed to use this option twice.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>My experience challenging a CIBC VISA card transaction through Paypal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We were travelling to Europe in the summer of 2015 and there were 7 of us travelling together. We were therefore looking for <strong>a private carrier<\/strong> that can drive us during 3 very specific moments of our trip.<\/p>\n<p>We found a supplier on the <strong>Web<\/strong> who could guarantee us the 3 rides on board a minivan-limousine. We agree on a price, then <strong>the supplier asks me to pay it in full in advance <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"Paypal\" href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/paypal\/\">via Paypal<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I pay for it <strong>using my CIBC VISA Aeroplan credit card<\/strong> <strong>linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/paypal\/\">my Paypal account<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The first two rides went as planned and we were very satisfied with the service provided. But everything went wrong during the 3rd ride, the most important for us since it had to bring us back to the airport, 90 minutes from where we were.<\/p>\n<p>We searched for our carrier&#8230; to no avail. &#8220;Panic&#8221; among the family.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24229\" style=\"width: 809px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/minibus-1651031_960_720.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-24229\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/minibus-1651031_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"minibus 1651031 960 720\" width=\"809\" height=\"539\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our driver must have gotten lost&#8230;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We finally spoke with the carrier who told us that the driver was on his way. Time is running out and our plane won&#8217;t be waiting for us!<\/p>\n<p>After more than an hour of waiting, we switch to plan B and find a local driver who agrees to pick up all 7 of us with our suitcases and drive us to Hamburg airport. Of course, we paid the full price for this trip on the spot.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Montreal, <strong>I took the necessary steps with the transportation provider to get compensation and reimbursement for the transportation that he did not provide us with<\/strong>. He asked me to send him a Paypal payment request, to wait until September for tax reasons &#8230; In short, I realize after a while that I&#8217;m being taken for a ride and that he has no intention to refund me.<\/p>\n<p>[vc_message color=&#8221;info&#8221;]Before taking any steps with your credit card provider, try to speak with merchant! It will be a proof of your good faith if things get out of hand![\/vc_message]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/support-1984615_960_720.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-24230\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/support-1984615_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"support 1984615 960 720\" width=\"599\" height=\"328\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>So I contacted my credit card issuer<\/strong> and told them that I want to challenge a transaction. CIBC opens a file number and asks me to write them a short letter explaining the situation and to attach any useful document (ex: invoice, email exchanges, &#8230;).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24216\" style=\"width: 536px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cibc-1-jf.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24216\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/cibc-1-jf.png\" alt=\"cibc 1 jf\" width=\"536\" height=\"465\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My chargeback with CIBC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two weeks later,<strong> I received a $310 credit on my credit card and the file was closed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the payment had been made <a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/paypal\/\">via Paypal<\/a>, I got my money back through my credit card issuer. And even though it was really just a matter of recovering only a portion of my payment, it went very well with CIBC.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>My experience of challenging a transaction on an American Express card and a Paypal payment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Last November, I saw on social media the announcement of a cool new product that would look great as a home decoration.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24231\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24231\" style=\"width: 811px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/background-3068391_960_720.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-24231\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/background-3068391_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"background 3068391 960 720\" width=\"811\" height=\"538\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No, that&#8217;s not the cool thing I tried to buy!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I followed the steps on the company&#8217;s website and I ordered 2 items. The site uses Paypal and I pay with <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"The Marriott Bonvoy\u2122 American Express<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Card\" href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/amex-marriott-bonvoy-card\/\">my Marriott Bonvoy\u2122 American Express<sup>&reg;<\/sup> Card<\/a> which is<a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/en\/go\/paypal\/\"> linked to my Paypal account<\/a> (I am trying to spend 1500$ to trigger the welcome bonus).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24216\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24216\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24217\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-1.png\" alt=\"paypal amex 1\" width=\"580\" height=\"247\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My transaction on Paypal with my American Express card<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I receive an order confirmation from the supplier and so far everything looks good.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24218\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24218\" style=\"width: 491px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24218\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-2.jpg\" alt=\"paypal amex 2\" width=\"491\" height=\"473\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Confirmation of purchase from the seller<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then I receive a first email confirming that my purchase has been shipped&#8230; but I don&#8217;t receive anything. I write to them and they mention that there was a mistake in the address. 2 weeks later, I receive a second email confirming the shipment of my purchase but I still don&#8217;t receive anything. I write to the supplier again and surprise, my email bounces back!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24218\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24218\" style=\"width: 741px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24219 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-3.jpg\" alt=\"paypal amex 3\" width=\"741\" height=\"182\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A salesman for absent subscribers!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I then did several searches on the Internet and notices that, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ripoffreport.com\/\"><em>ripoffreport.com,<\/em><\/a> several others had also been scammed. They shared their experience and it is strangely similar to mine. They never received the product, no way to contact the supplier&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I therefore decide to challenge the transaction with American Express<\/strong>. So the pressure from the card issuer allowed me to finally get what I had bought.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24232\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24232\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/gift-1760869_960_720.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-24232\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/gift-1760869_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"gift 1760869 960 720\" width=\"810\" height=\"540\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24232\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">After some pressure from American Express, the seller finally sent me my package (it wasn&#8217;t the one in the picture&#8230;).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the spirit of honesty and candour, I wrote to American Express to let them know that thanks to them I finally received my merchandise and that I no longer wished to challenge the transaction.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24226\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24226\" style=\"width: 486px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24226\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-10.jpg\" alt=\"paypal amex 10\" width=\"486\" height=\"597\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Follow-up of the dispute on American Express<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24227\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24227\" style=\"width: 659px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24227\" src=\"https:\/\/milesopedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/paypal-amex-11.png\" alt=\"paypal amex 11\" width=\"659\" height=\"286\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24227\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Turnaround of the transaction<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>In the first example, the challenge allowed me to recover an amount <strong>for a service that was never provided<\/strong>.
