On average, a mile is worth about 1.4 US cents (about 1.9 Canadian cents). However, on business-class flights with partner airlines, the value can climb well beyond 2 US cents per mile.

Conversely, some redemptions such as car rentals or hotel stays offer a value below 1 cent per mile. The rule is simple: prioritize flights to get the most out of your miles.

Earning AAdvantage miles

Canadians have several ways to earn AAdvantage miles, even if the options remain more limited than for other programs such as Aeroplan or British Airways Executive Club.

RBC Avion points transfer

The main lever for Canadians is transferring RBC Avion Rewards points to AAdvantage. The ratio is 1,000 Avion points for 750 AAdvantage miles (i.e., 0.75:1). The minimum transfer is 5,000 Avion points.

This ratio is not the most advantageous compared to transfers to other programs. However, RBC sometimes offers transfer bonuses that improve the rate. Watch for these promotions, as they can make the transfer significantly more attractive.

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card and RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card allow you to earn Avion points that can be transferred to AAdvantage.

    ONLY ONE US TRANSFER PROGRAM

If you have a credit file in the United States, note that only cards from the Citi ThankYou program will allow you to transfer points to AAdvantage miles. Historically, the best price observed is around 2.45 US cents per mile.

Buying miles is mainly worthwhile if you have a specific booking in mind where the value per mile far exceeds the purchase cost. Its key strengths: a fixed-price partner chart with competitive rates, low taxes and fees, free cancellations, and one of the industry’s best oneworld availability search tools.

Earning miles remains the main challenge for Canadians, with RBC Avion Rewards transfers as the only bank transfer option. Watch for transfer and mile-purchase promotions to maximize your balance.
