The American Express Platinum Card is one of the best cards for travelers. Here's why you should apply for it right now.
150,000 points! This is a bonus that has never been offered in Canada. Find out why you should apply for this great offer before August 3, 2021.
150,000 bonus Membership Rewards points
Through August 3, 2021, you could earn up to 150,000 Membership Rewards points with the Platinum Card® from American Express:
- 70,000 points if you make $6,000 in purchases in the first 6 months (an average of $1,000 per month)
- 10 x points on purchases in grocery stores, restaurants, bars and bistros up to 50,000 points
- 30,000 points if you make a purchase within 14 to 17 months of joining
The most optimal way to earn 120,000 Membership Rewards points (the first year’s bonus) is to spend $5,000 at grocery stores, restaurants, bars and bistros and $1,000 on miscellaneous purchases.
So you will have spent $6,000 in the first 6 months, which will give you 70,000 points and 50,000 points, for a total of 120,000 points. Unheard of in the first year with the Platinum Card® from American Express.
For the third part of the welcome bonus – 30,000 points – this involves paying a new membership fee for the second year (and making any purchases in the 14-17 months following your membership).
This is called a “retention” bonus to encourage you to keep the Card.
If you travel, you won ‘t want to do without this card, especially since it has regained some exclusive advantages over the competition, as you’ll see below in the airport lounges. And remember, you’ll get a $200 annual travel credit again when you renew.
Here’s what 150,000 points can do for you:
- $3,000 by booking select airfare through the American Express flat rate schedule
- 150,000 Aeroplan points or Avios miles to book business class airfare (and many economy class tickets) or $2,550 according to our estimate
- $1,500 credit to the account for any purchase
As you can see, no matter what happens, you will be able to get at least $1,500 from those 150,000 points!
Annual travel credit of $200
The annual fee for the Platinum Card® from American Express is $699. Yes, it is high. However, one of its benefits virtually decreases its annual fee to $499: the $200 annual travel credit.
With this credit, you can book a hotel or airline ticket on the American Express Travel site and get a $200 credit directly to your account.
Since this card is essentially for travellers who would have paid travel expenses, it is a $499 fee and not a $699 fee that should be considered.
Airport lounges are beginning to reopen in Canada and around the world. Except that one big piece of news came during the COVID-19 pandemic: the removal of most Plaza Premium lounges from the Priority Pass and LoungeKey networks.
This means that all credit cards offering Priority Pass or LoungeKey in Canada have seen many airport lounge doors close. This is the case for 14 Plaza Premium salons in Canada.
Why does this make the Platinum Card® from American Express stand out? This card not only provides unlimited access for the cardholder and one guest to Priority Pass lounges, but also offers direct access to many other partner lounges such as Plaza Premium.
To do so, simply show your Platinum Card® at the entrance. This is a way for you to bypass the withdrawal of Plaza Premium lounges from the Priority Pass and LoungeKey networks.
As far as we know, the Platinum Card® from American Express and the small business version – the Business Platinum Card® from American Express – are now the only cards in Canada to offer access to Plaza Premium lounges worldwide.
And you can also treat yourself to the luxury of American Express Centurion lounges, of which there are more and more, especially in the United States.
Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold statutes
The Platinum Card® from American Express is the only card in Canada to offer Hilton Honors Gold status. This status is important: you get free breakfast at all Hilton hotels worldwide (and a breakfast credit in the US).
This is a significant advantage, especially for families. I’ve taken advantage of it many times, like here at the Hilton Lake Taupo in New Zealand. That’s enough to save $80 to $100 every day!
You’ll also earn Marriott Bonvoy Gold status. However, this one has lost some steam with the transition from Starwood Preferred Guest to Marriott Rewards: don’t expect much from it.
I might have added that with the Platinum Card® from American Express you can:
- earn 3 points per dollar for meals, 2 points per dollar for travel and 1 point everywhere else
- Benefit from regular online promotional offers that can earn you several hundred dollars in account credit each year
- access the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts program
- be covered by generous travel insurance
- take advantage of Hertz benefits (including an additional 4 hours free of charge to return your vehicle)
- have one of the only metal cards in Canada
It’s a card that I renew every year: the airport lounge access alone that the card provides covers its annual fee in my eyes.
With 2021-2022 looking promising for travel, now is the best time to be well equipped with the Frequent Flyer Card!
No doubt an offer as limited in duration as this one (6 weeks to August 3, 2021) will not likely happen again anytime soon, especially if travel and the economy picks up as quickly as it is right now. And that American Express has exceptionally extended the deadline for minimum spending to 6 months (instead of 3).
If I wasn’t already a cardholder since 2016, I would jump on this offer!
