Get Flying Blue status with flights on WestJet

To the point WestJet is expanding its partnership with Air France-KLM's Flying Blue program, by offering you Flying Blue status with your WestJet flights!

WestJet's partnership with Flying Blue

WestJet is intensifying its partnership with Flying Blue, Air France-KLM’s loyalty program.

After setting mutual benefits in 2017, such as earning and redeem miles in the respective programs, travelling on WestJet will allow you to earn Experience Points (XP) towards Flying Blue status.

Flying Blue's XP

The Flying Blue loyalty program was completely overhauled in April 2018:

Status Experience Points XP
Ivory 0
Silver 100
Gold 100 + 180
Platinum 100 + 180 + 300
elite 1,800 (over 2 years)

Thus, to get Gold status, an Ivory member must obtain 100 XP to become Silver and then 180 XP to become Gold.

Once a status is reached, the XP counter is reset to 0, and the member has one year to get the necessary Experience Points.

It is, therefore, challenging to access the higher statuses for casual travellers.

XP Experience Points are calculated based on:

  • the distance: domestic/medium-haul/long-haul (subdivided into 3 categories)
  • the cabin

How do I get Flying Blue miles in Canada?

In Canada, there are several ways to easily earn Flying Blue miles such as through the American Express Membership Rewards program or the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program.

Here are several credit card offers that allow you to earn Flying Blue Miles directly or indirectly:

Bottom Line

WestJet is getting a little closer to Flying Blue and Skyteam?

The airline has high ambitions, particularly with the launch of its B787 aircraft, which will enable it to serve international destinations.

Joining an alliance like Skyteam would allow it to reach more travellers and position itself as a true competitor to Air Canada and Star Alliance.
