New Devaluation Of The SCENE Program
Only 2 years, almost to the day after the last devaluation, SCENE makes a new devaluation while most of the country’s movie theatres are currently closed. You’ll get fewer points for some purchases.
Fortunately, the value of the points held in SCENE accounts remains unchanged for the time being; the “redemption” side is not affected.

Purchases at Cineplex Theatres
As of April 30, you’ll earn 5 points for every $1 you spend on movie tickets.
Whereas today it is possible to earn between 125 and 250 points per movie. Knowing that a ticket’s cost is about $14, this makes a difference of almost 50% on the earning side.
Purchases on the Cineplex store
As of March 1st, you’ll earn 5 points for every $1 you spend on movie rentals and purchases on the Cineplex Store. That’s half as much as today (10 points per dollar).
Playdium purchases
Finally, at Playdium locations, starting April 30th, you’ll earn 1 point for every $1 you spend on food, drinks, games and entertainment. That’s 10 times less than today (10 points per dollar). WoW!
Conclusion
The movie theatres have been closed for months and are in a very delicate situation. However, it is unfortunate to see a rewards program make so many devaluations in such a short period of time. And doing it while our eyes are turned elsewhere!
Maybe SCENE is betting that the theatres will have missed the spectators so much that maintaining loyalty won’t be a problem! At the very least, if you use the Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card, you will continue to earn 5 points per dollar spent at movie theatres: that’s a 5% return in travel rewards!
