Marriott Bonvoy has just announced changes to the Points Advance feature when making an award reservation.
Within the Marriott Bonvoy program, it is possible to use a feature called“Points Advance .” With the Points Advance feature, you can make a reservation for an award night at a Marriott Bonvoy hotel without having the necessary number of points in your account.
The Points Advance feature is convenient, for example, for members who would have applied for the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card knowing that they would get a welcome bonus to cover a booking within a few weeks.
Until now, it was only necessary to have the points in your account at least 14 days before your arrival at the hotel. For example, you could have transferred Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy, transferred points from another Marriott Bonvoy account (friend or spouse), and earned the necessary number of points with one of the Marriott Bonvoy credit cards or purchased Marriott Bonvoy points.
Otherwise, without the necessary points in your account 14 days before arrival at the hotel, the reservation was automatically cancelled. It was a very generous policy, in fact too generous.
Points Advance: Changes
Effective immediately, all reservations using the Marriott Bonvoy Points Advance can only be held for 60 days from the date of booking. If the points are not present in the account after this period, the reservation will be automatically cancelled.
For bookings with less than 60 days of arrival, the usual rule applies: if the points are not in your Marriott Bonvoy account at least 14 days before arrival, the booking will be automatically cancelled.
It is still possible to make up to 3 simultaneous reservations using the Points Advance feature.
This new policy is retroactive and therefore applies to bookings already made before today. If you have enough points to cover your reservation made with Points Advance, click the “Modify” button on your reservation to validate it.
Why these changes?
In its note shared on the Marriott Insiders Facebook group, Marriott Bonvoy said the changes were made following numerous bookings using Points Advance for popular destinations, 25% of which ended up being cancelled.
All these non finalized reservations had an impact on the hotels (which had difficulty reselling the rooms with this notice of 2 weeks) as towards Marriott Bonvoy members who would have wished to find rooms available in these hotels. Like when using a Free Night Award Certificate in a popular hotel!
For a limited time, when you apply for the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card via milesopedia, you can get a great welcome bonus:
- 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points after $3,000 in Card purchases in the first 3 months
- Plus, you can earn a $120 statement credit after you charge $10,000 in net purchases to your Card in the first 12 months of your Cardmembership.
A similar offer is available for the Small Business Card (available to sole-proprietors, professionals or small business owners): the Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card.
