Our opinion on this offer

BMO has decided to increase its official welcome offer for the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard from 30,000 to 90,000 points.

The offer above is EXCLUSIVE to Milesopedia: 100,000 points, 10,000 points more than the offer on the BMO website.

The first part of the offer is relatively simple to get: 55,000 points after $4,500 in purchases over three months. The second part is aimed at those who regularly use the card: 3,750 points per month after $2,500 in purchases from the 4th month onwards.

To better explain the breakdown of the Welcome Bonus, here is a summary chart, including the required spending and points earned through that spending (based on the 2X or 3X categories):

Month Purchases Category (2X or 3X) Bonus Total

Total $34,500 69,000103,500 points 100,000 points 169,000203,500 points

As you can see, in the first year, you’ll be able to earn a bonus of 88,750 points in addition to the points earned with your purchases. The condition being that you respect the minimum amount to spend each month.

If you wish to keep your card for a second year (which we recommend, given the insurance and benefits on offer, such as access to airport lounges), you can earn 100,000 points in addition to the points earned with your purchases in the 15th month.

This welcome offer is clearly aimed at cardholders who spend $2,500 or more monthly. So let’s take this a step further by calculating the percentage return on your purchases since we know that a BMO Rewards point has a value of $0.00667 for travel rewards.

Month Purchases Category (2X or 3X) Bonus Total %
1 $1,500 $20-$30 $20-$30 1,33 – 2%

Total $34,500 $456 – $690 $667 $1,123$1,357 3,25 – 3,93%

As you can see, including the welcome offer and your monthly spending on the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard, you get an effective return of 3.5% to 4.2% on your spending during the first 12 months.

If you wish to unlock only the first part of the bonus (55,000 points after $4,500 in Card purchases), you will have achieved an effective return of around 10% on your purchases. Not so bad, right?

Our opinion on this offer
