Earning points

With the New BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card, you can earn 5x the BMO Rewards points for every $1 spent on:

  • Groceries
  • Dining
  • Food delivery
  • Gas
  • Transit

And 1 BMO Rewards point for every $1 spent on everything else.

Here are a few purchases I’ve made on my new BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card:

Bmo Eclipse Points

As you can see, on the points earning side, the new BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card focuses on everyday purchases: groceries, gas, local transportation, restaurants, bars and food delivery (trendy in 2020-2021).

All 5x categories (with a Visa credit card accepted almost anywhere)!

I’ve earned 5 points per dollar for my purchases on food delivery (GoodFood), take-out restaurant (McDonald’s) or bakery.

If you use your points for travel, that means a 3.33% return on those purchases (or 2.5% if you use the pay with points option).

For all other purchases, you’ll earn 1 point per dollar.

I’ve also purchased something on Costco.ca (which accepts Mastercard AND Visa credit cards): I’ve only earned 1 point per dollar.

10% more points with supplemental cardholders

If you add an authorized user to your account, you will earn 10% more points.

So you will earn 5.5 points per dollar in the bonus categories (groceries, gas, local transportation, restaurants, bars, food delivery). That’s a return of 3.66% if you use your points for travel purchases through BMO Rewards.

The additional card fee is $50. Therefore, to break even, you’ll need to spend at least $14,000 per year. And if you spend more, you’ll get more value!

Using points

You can use your BMO Rewards points in many ways:

  • Travel
  • Pay with your points option for any purchase
  • Products or gift cards
  • Investment

Let’s analyze the two most common uses of BMO Rewards points.

Redeem your BMO Rewards Points for travel

To redeem your BMO Rewards points, you’ll need to use the BMO Rewards website. You can redeem BMO Rewards points for different types of trips:

  • flights
  • hotel nights
  • Car rentals
  • Vacation packages
  • Cruises

Prices are the same as other travel agencies.

Santorini

Using BMO Rewards points for travel is the best use of your points: 150 points = $1. For example, 60,000 points worth $400.

For example, if you spend $1,500 per month in the 5x categories with the new BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* card (groceries, restaurants and bars, food delivery, gas, local transportation), you’ll earn 7,500 points per month, a $50 value for travel.

Over a year, that’s $600 you can earn this way! You can get a free flight or several free hotel nights for many destinations. And 10% more if you add an authorized user to your account.

Redeem BMO Rewards points for all purchases

You can also use your BMO Rewards points for any purchase made on your card, starting at $1.

Here, 200 points = $1. For example, 60,000 points worth $300.

Conclusion

The BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card was launched when travel stopped, and everyday expenses such as groceries or food delivery took precedence over other types of spending.

In this sense, earning 5 points per dollar on this type of purchase with a Visa card (accepted almost everywhere) for an effective return of more than 3.5% is particularly interesting.

And thanks to an annual statement credit you can use however you want (and not just travel like other credit cards), it’s a way for BMO to “virtually” lower the annual fee for loyal customers.

During the second year, the annual fee is equal to $70 for the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card (after the $50 annual credit) This can provide the benefits of a Visa Infinite credit card at a reduced cost, year after year!

With travel starting up again this year, this exclusive offer to earn up to 70,000 BMO Rewards points (or $467 in travel rewards) is a welcome addition to your upcoming travels!

To apply for the new BMO eclipse Visa Infinite* Card, you must have a minimum annual income of $60,000 (individual) or $100,000 (household).
