Aeroplan + Journie: Earn and Redeem Points for Gas and EV Charging

To the point Aeroplan and Journie are partnering to allow you to collect and redeem points for fuel and EV charging!

Beginning in the fall of 2023, Aeroplan and Journie Rewards members who link their loyalty accounts will be able to take advantage of more earning and redemption opportunities and will have more options to access new perks.

All of Parkland’s Canadian gas station and convenience store brands will participate, including:

  • Ultramar
  • Chevron
  • Pioneer
  • Fas Gas
  • ON the RUN
  • Express Market

Rewards for electric vehicle charging are also available through the Journie Rewards and Aeroplan programs.

Please note that since February 21, 2023, Ultramar stations with a Couche-Tard convenience store are no longer linked to the Journie program.

“We are thrilled to come together with the Parkland family of brands to offer Aeroplan members a new way to earn and redeem points in their everyday lives,” said Mark Nasr, President of Aeroplan. “Our members have long been asking for a fuel partner, and Parkland’s extensive reach across Canada, their best-in-class retail experience, and their investments in low carbon fuels and EV charging infrastructure, make them the perfect fit.”

We do not yet know the details of Aeroplan point earning and redemption at Journie Rewards gas stations and EV charging stations, or potential special offers; this information will be revealed by the time of the fall 2023 launch.

Currently in the province of Quebec, there are no Parkland gas stations connected to a network of electric charging stations. There are of course charging stations in Ultramar gas stations, but they are associated with Circuit Électrique or ChargePoint. The Parkland Group does not own these kiosks so it is not likely that Aeroplan points will be accumulated.

Parkland has fast charging stations (up to 150 kW) in British Columbia and Alberta. His network is with ON the RUN and connected to Journie. Then it would only be these terminals that would earn Aeroplan points.

It does not seem to have any plans to expand east part of the country. It’s a shame, because Quebec is the province with the most electric and hybrid vehicles in Canada.

Credit cards to save on gas

Until now, savings on every liter of gasoline are available through the Journie Rewards program with the following cash back cards: the CIBCMD Visa Infinite* Dividend Card and the CIBCMD Visa* Platinum Dividend Card.

Those who prefer to use Aeroplan points rather than cash back can already use these two credit cards to earn 1.5 Aeroplan points for every dollar spent on gas:

A great alternative would be to use the American Express Business Edge™ Card which earns 3 Membership Rewards points per dollar for gas.

Or the American Express Cobalt® Card which earns 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar for gas.

Since Membership Rewards points are flexible and can be transferred to the Aeroplan program at a 1:1 ratio, that’s 2 to 3 Aeroplan points per dollar for gas, in addition to the new Aeroplan/Journie partnership rewards that will be announced soon.

And if you prefer to use your Membership Rewards points for cash back on your credit card account, that’s 2-3% per dollar!

This gives you flexibility in how you use your Reward Points.

Loyalty programs and gas stations

Shell and the AIR MILES program have had a partnership since 1992 and will continue for some time. Given the uncertain future of AIR MILES and this major announcement on the Aeroplan – Journie partnership, Shell is in a difficult position.

In fact, Shell is owned by the Empire Group, which owns the Scene+ program. This program is not yet linked to a major gas station chain, such as PC Optimum with Esso for example.

So there might be some twists and turns or promotions to expect in this area in the coming months.

Bottom Line

This new feature will allow greater flexibility in the accumulation and redemption of Aeroplan points. Whether it’s to reduce your gas bill in your day-to-day car use, to reach a goal in points that will help pay for an upcoming trip, or to save money on a road trip across Canada, it’s one more way you can use your Aeroplan points in your own way, according to your plans and lifestyle.

By the time the Aeroplan/Journie partnership launches in the fall of 2023, Aeroplan points can already be earned on gas and electric charging purchases using credit cards.
