Our review of the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino
The Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino is located about 20 minutes from SJU International Airport.
To get there, we had to use a local taxi (22 US$ – flat rate with one piece of luggage / card s Mastercard – Visa – American Express accepted), the drivers of Uber not being allowed to pick up passengers on arrival. However, they can drop them off at the start.
This hotel is located in front of the Exhibition Centre and 5 minutes by car from the old San Juan, the purpose of our stay.
On site, there is of course a parking lot if you have a rental car (as well as an Avis rental agency, which is convenient to avoid the airport’s surcharged rentals!).
The lobby
We will proceed with the recording through the dedicated line Elite.
The staff is welcoming and thanks us for choosing Puerto Rico as a vacation destination. Clearly, locals are eager to completely close the stigma of Hurricane Maria, which devastated the island in September 2017. And in this, only the return of tourists to the Island will help them.
Even though the stay is paid in full with points and a free night certificate, I give my Marriott BonvoyTM American ExpressMD Card as a deposit… and to pay the US$15 per night fee to use points (a truly uncommon practice, which could be likened to a resort fee in disguise).
I express my displeasure on this point, but the receptionist tells me she can’t do anything about it… pointing out that my Titanium Elite status still allowed for an upgrade afterwards. Enough to pass the 15 US$ / night pill!

The children’s playroom
Right next to the reception and the elevators is a children’s playroom. It’s much appreciated!
The Suite
Direction our room which is located on the 4th floor, on the same level as the swimming pool.
We enter our suite through the bedroom, which has a king size bed.
This room is in fact what you can have at 25,000 points per night (the suite part being in fact another large communicating room transformed into a living room). Here are more views of this room:
As a welcome gift, we appreciate a plate of fruit and a bottle of Fiji water.
In this room there is a bathroom of the correct size and “standard”.
A communicating door opens onto the living room which is composed of a sofa bed in which our children will sleep.
The room is really nice for our children, especially because of its size!
In this room there is a kitchenette with a microwave, coffee machine and refrigerator: handy for feeding bottles!
Alongside our suite there is a large terrace where we can relax during the children’s siesta.
The pool
The advantage of being on the 4th floor… is that it is on the same level as the swimming pool. As soon as they arrived, the children put on their bathing suits for a little swim before exploring the city.

There is a large infinity pool and a paddling pool with a hot tub. Alexandra’s having a ball.

The hotel lounge
Head to the hotel lounge for refreshments before exploring old San Juan.
The lounge is located on the top floor of the hotel and is bathed in light. It gives a good overview of the surroundings and in particular of the cruise ships calling at the port of call.
In the evening, refreshments and other treats are offered.
In the morning, breakfast is available in this lounge for Platinum / Titanium / Ambassador Elite members.
I couldn’t take many pictures… the span class=”term” data-original-term=”c2Fsb24=”>salon>/span> being crowded! The level of food offered is rather summary.
Bottom Line
A good stay in this hotel which, at the time of our stay, cost us 25,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. Upgrading the suite has greatly improved our experience, especially when accompanied by our children.
We regret however the 15 US$ per day for stays paid with points and a really standard breakfast.
