A small business card from the Marriott Bonvoy™ hotel program
Marriott International is the largest hotel group in the world with more than 7,000 properties.
Marriott International has partnered with American Express to offer 2 credit cards in Canada:
Being frequent travelers, it was logical for Audrey & I – each having business expenses – to apply for the Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card.
Get Marriott Bonvoy™ points through your business expenses
Current business expenses
Unlike the consumer version, which has only 2 categories of purchases, our Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card card has a 3rd category allowing us to earn 3 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar on our:
- travel purchases (hotels, flights, car rental, cruises…)
- gas purchases
- our restaurants / bars expenses
Add to that all the other purchases a company can make !
On our side it is for example:
- Annual membership in a professional order (the Ordre des Pharmaciens du Québec accepts payment by American Express card via Paypal)
- Monthly subscriptions to services (cellphone / internet, online accounting software, Google Apps, iCloud…)
- Our computer equipments
- Our office supplies
Other types of business expenses
Get Marriott Bonvoy™ points through your hotel stays
We stay very frequently in Marriott Bonvoy™ hotels and use our Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card to pay for those stays (when we don’t use our points!)
By doing so, you get 5 Marriott Bonvoy™ points for every dollar!
And this applies to any expense incurred at participating Marriott Bonvoy properties:
- hotel night
- service received within the property (business centre, spa…)
- meeting room rental
- event organization
- restaurants, bars
By charging all those expenses to your Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card, you could also earn 5 Marriott Bonvoy points / dollar!
15 Elite Night Credits to reach a new status level
With our Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card, we automatically get the Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status, which gives us the right to:
- Late departure priority
- 10% point bonus on stays
- Free Wi-Fi
And each year, our Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card offers us 15 Elite Night Credits to our Marriott Bonvoy account. It is a great way to progress more quickly towards the next status levels – Gold Elite status and then Platinum Elite status.
With the Gold Elite status – 10 nights left during the year to get it (25 nights total) – you get:
- A 25% point bonus on stays from the Marriott Bonvoy program
- Enhanced room upgrade
- 2 PM late check-out
And with Platinum Elite status – 35 nights left during the year to get it (50 nights total) – you get many benefits including:
- 5 Suite Night Awards
- Access to the lounge
- Free breakfasts
An Annual Free Night Award
Each year, after we reach our account anniversary date, we get a free one-night certificate directly in our Marriott Bonvoy account.
It is possible to redeem this certificate for a free night with a maximum value of 35,000 points.
If used properly, this certificate can represent several hundred dollars!
Look, for example, where we were able to stay during a trip in Europe. A 4-star hotel, on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice which would have cost us more than 500 CA$ per night!
A welcome offer of 50,000 points
With a welcome offer of 50,000 points, it is enough for 3 free nights at a Category 2 hotel.
For us, this has been a way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points through our business expenses to get more free nights at properties like the Al Maha Hotel, Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Dubai!
A tax-deductible annual fee
Did you know? The annual fee for your business credit card can be considered a “management and administration fee“.
They can therefore be deducted from your return on line 8871 if you use your Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card for business expenses!
*Do not hesitate to consult your tax advisor on this subject.
Who can apply for this card?
This card is not exclusively reserved for managers of large companies.
In fact, as long as you are a business owner, and you can say yes to the following before applying:
- You are a Canadian resident and have a Canadian credit file.
- You are the age of majority in the province or territory where you live.
Then you may be eligible for this card.
We could add to all of this, the range of benefits offered to American Express members (such as Front of the Line), Amex promotional offers – now available online – or the travel & purchases insurances offered by the card.
Therefore, all these reasons make, in our opinion, the Marriott Bonvoy™ Business American Express® Card the best credit card for professionals, self-employed workers or SMEs in Canada!
