Swoop to be integrated into WestJet
Westjet has announced that it has signed its second collective agreement with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). In this contract, WestJet has an agreement to integrate the ultra-low-cost Swoop completely into its core operations.
This means that Swoop will continue to operate until October 28, 2023 inclusive, after which Swoop employees will be transferred to WestJet. This will be the end of the Swoop airline.
What happens after October 28, 2023?
It has not yet been confirmed whether WestJet will use all of Swoop’s existing routes, at the same price. WestJet Group CEO said:
We are continuing our strategy of offering reliable, affordable travel across the WestJet Group, building on the valuable experience and lessons learned from the Swoop business model.
Bottom line
Swoop began flying in June 2018 and has 16 aircraft in its fleet. Canadians will have been able to take advantage of these low prices for just over five years.
It will be interesting to see what WestJet plans to do, especially since they recently bought the Sunwing airline. They didn’t have any flights to or from the province of Quebec, but Swoop could be a tempting alternative for passengers looking for low-cost travel in Canada.
