What’s The Best Aeroplan Credit Card For You?

To the point

Are you looking for the best Aeroplan credit card for you? Here are some suggestions and alternative credit cards as well.

What's The Best Aeroplan Credit Card For You?

This article will try to find the best Aeroplan credit card for each kind of traveller. And also, what the alternative credit cards are!

Aeroplan credit cards for families

Having two children, the new Aeroplan credit card offers piqued our interest. And we’ve seen, within the milesopedia’s community, many families sharing this interest!

Indeed, some Aeroplan credit card offers are exciting in many aspects:

  • Up to eight travelling companions on the same reservation will all enjoy their first checked bag free: 2 adults and 2 children, that’s 4 pieces of 23 kgs for free!
  • Preferred Pricing for flight rewards: according to our calculations, you can save between 5 to 15% in points depending on the flights
  • Air Canada Buddy Pass: according to our calculations, you can save between $700 and $1,300 for 2 adults each with a Buddy Pass for their 2 children

I am assuming that, rather than adding a supplementary card, each spouse will apply for one of these Aeroplan credit cards as a primary cardholder. It’s the best way to maximize the welcome offer of the Air Canada Buddy Pass.

What can be done in our situation:

We each earn an Air Canada Buddy Pass in our respective Aeroplan account.

When we’re ready to book our trip, Audrey will use her Air Canada Buddy Pass for our daughter. And me… for our son!

So, our two children will travel almost for free thanks to the Air Canada Buddy Pass! And, with the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card, we will be able to join NEXUS and get a $100 application fee rebate!

Aeroplan credit cards for couples / friends

If you are travelling as a couple or with a friend, some of the new Aeroplan credit card offers may work for you.

Indeed, with the Air Canada Buddy Pass, if you split the cost, it’s like each of the two travellers got a 50% discount on their flight!

If you plan to travel once in 2021/2022, only one of you needs to apply for one of these Aeroplan credit cards. On the other hand, if you plan to make two trips, I suggest you both apply for these Aeroplan credit cards! It will save you a lot of money on these two trips!

If you do not have the $60,000 minimum income required for the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card, then the American Express® Aeroplan®* Card is for you with no minimum income required!

Aeroplan credit cards for business travellers

For business travellers, only one Aeroplan credit card stands out: the American Express® Aeroplan®* Business Reserve Card.

If you can meet the minimum spending requirements ($2,000 per month for six months), you will get:

  • 65,000 Aeroplan points
  • A $100 statement credit
  • Unlimited access to Air Canada Maple Leaf lounges
  • First checked bag for free
  • And more!

At $599, this small business card is primarily aimed at professionals who travel regularly.

And you can receive one Annual Worldwide Companion Pass when you spend $25,000 in net purchases prior to your Card anniversary date; your Pass entitles you to buy an accompanying Air Canada economy class ticket for a companion at a fixed base fare from $99 to a maximum of $599 CAD. It could be interesting in your situation.

Aeroplan credit cards for individual travellers

Couples and families have been well served with the new Aeroplan credit card offers. Especially with the Air Canada Buddy Pass or the free checked bag for up to 8 travel companions.

However, these are not good arguments for individual travellers. I think they would have preferred Aeroplan points!

Thus, within the credit card offers, only two give you more points:

$200,000 is a really high requirement for many solos travellers, so the winner is the American Express® Aeroplan®* Reserve Card requiring no minimum income. If you are able to meet the minimum spending requirements ($1,000 per month for six months), you will earn:

  • 65,000 Aeroplan points
  • A $100 statement credit
  • Unlimited access to Air Canada Maple Leaf lounges
  • First checked bag for free
  • And more!

At $599, this card is not for everyone. But considering the Aeroplan points earned, the $100 statement credit, and other perks, this is a juicy offer! Otherwise, you’ll have to look for other credit cards earning Aeroplan points (and not an Air Canada Buddy Pass).

Other credit cards to get Aeroplan points

It is useful to remember that you can earn Aeroplan points with other credit cards in Canada!

This is the case with most Membership Rewards Cards from American Express:

In my opinion, the best choice is the American Express® Gold Rewards Card. You can get a welcome bonus of 25,000 Membership Rewards points (equal to 25,000 Aeroplan points)

You can earn 2 points per dollar for:

  • Grocery stores
  • Gas stations
  • Drugstores
  • Travel

Besides, it provides premium insurance.

Another way to earn Aeroplan points is with Marriott Bonvoy and Best Western Rewards credit cards:

In my opinion, the best choice here is the Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express® Card. You can get a welcome bonus of 50,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.

It will only take a short time for you to reach 60,000 points with your daily spending, which is the perfect level to transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points to Aeroplan points! Actually, for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points transferred, you get 5,000 additional Aeroplan points.

So, 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points = 25,000 Aeroplan points! And if you wait for a conversion promotion, you might even get more Aeroplan points!

Finally, if you are looking for a 100% free option: you can get 4,000 Aeroplan points when you transfer 20,000 Best Western Rewards points you get with the Best Western Rewards® Mastercard. A card with no annual fee.

Finally, you have to know that the American Express Cobalt™ Card cannot transfer points directly to Aeroplan.

But you can transfer points to Marriott Bonvoy then to Aeroplan:

50,000 Membership Rewards points = 60,000 Marriott points = 25,000 Aeroplan points

It’s an option to keep in the back of your mind!

Conclusion

As you can see, there are plenty of options to earn Aeroplan points and/or benefits for travelling on Air Canada! Whether it’s through Aeroplan credit cards or cards allowing you to transfer points to Aeroplan, there is probably a credit card for you!

You could also give a chance to a travel rewards credit card, which will give you even more flexibility! You’ll find exciting current offers there!
