Exploring Portland, Maine

Nous avons tous, au sein de la communauté milesopedia, des envies et des occasions de voyager. C’est ce qui nous rassemble.

Les escapades sont parfois de quelques jours dans les environs, plus longtemps et plus loin lorsqu’on pousse la note et allant parfois, ô rêve, jusqu’au Mini-Tour du Monde ou ce fameux “Al Maha“.

On prend l’avion ou pas, on campe, demeure en hôtel, dans une maison échangée ou dans une location Airbnb (obtenue gratuitement ou presque avec nos points…) mais on voyage.

On part seul, en couple, en famille, entre amis mais on part. Par ici la sortie !

Je suis donc partie six jours avec ma fille en juillet, cette fois au Maine, à Portland.

Fraîchement débarquée de la Californie où elle habite avec son mari, ma fille avait – dans le cadre de son entreprise ‘Cause We Can Events – un contrat d’organisation d’événements, un mariage, à Portland.

We used my car, a five-and-a-half-hour drive through the White Mountains in New Hampshire.

We had several opportunities to stop for a walk or like hundreds of locals parked along Highway 3, for a free swim in the Connecticut River.

Equally beautiful is their reception in a rustic concert hall nearby, “The Vinegar Hill” under the Disney theme. The bride and groom are finished fans.

So much for the wedding report.

Portland is a city of 60,000 inhabitants that lives first from tourism. The waterfront is easily accessible thanks to a lively harbour.

The tourist office is located there and both sea and land excursions leave there.

The Eastern and Western walks allow you to walk this seaside pleasantly. The second leads to the park of the same name where several summer shows and festivities take place.

Finally, the shops and restaurants staying in former warehouses on and around the commercial street are inviting.

Portland est aussi un port de pêche actif et les lève-tôt, peuvent assister aux départs des bateaux de pêche le matin.

Désolée, je n’y suis pas arrivée.

Les occasions de déguster de bonnes bières abondent. Au total, une trentaine de brasseurs. Il existe même un tour guidé de certaines d’entre elles.

Le restaurant « Fore Street » est sur toutes les lèvres si vous avez le budget correspondant.

Nous avons plutôt opté pour le « Eventide Oysters Company » mais avec une heure d’attente et impossibilité de réserver nous nous sommes finalement tournées entre autres vers le « East Ender » et le Old Port Sea Grill ».

We recommend both of them. In addition, the small Lois’ Natural grocery store on India Street offers a great sandwich shop.

Parmi les tours, celui par bateau des îles de la Baie de Casco (non, pas Costco) nous aurait intéressé si ce n’avait été des apparences d’orage cette journée-là.

Le tour de ville par trolley l’a remplacé et nous avons apprécié découvrir le volet artistique et culturel de cette ville (le « Portland Museum of art » et l’art de la rue) tout comme ses belles maisons victoriennes.

We also had the opportunity to stop a little further, to see probably the most illustrated lighthouse in the world.

Le « Head Light au Cape Elizabeth » attire en effet plusieurs photographes et peintres. Situé le long des rives du Fort Williams, des sentiers donnent accès au bord de mer.

L’hôtel Residence Inn Portland Downtown/Waterfront choisi à 35,000 points/nuit pour un total de 140,000 points – grâce à la cinquième nuit gratuite – nous a procuré un séjour fort agréable.

A suite on the upper floor, kitchenette and breakfasts included, with pool and jacuzzi, a five-minute walk from the harbour and tourist office, and access to the garage roof to watch the July 4th fireworks.

Who could have done better? A value of more than $US 2000 this weekend of July 4th.

The hotel is very family-friendly and was at full capacity for the festivities. Animals are also allowed; we saw several owners with their dogs on a leash.

We were also told that Residence inn is often chosen for extended stays, the hotel offers a free grocery ordering service.

Forms to this effect are left in the rooms.

In short, it was a beautiful six days of work and mother-daughter discovery. A foretaste, indeed, since I would like to explore some aspects of the city in further detail.

I promise, next time, I’ll get up early enough to see the fishermen leave the harbour in the early morning.
