With the launch of the new iPhone 14, the new Apple Watch and the next generation of AirPods Pro, we have tips for you on how to get the most out of your purchase.
The price of a new iPhone starts from $1,099 and the 2nd generation AirPods Pro will be $329. The Apple Watch Series 8, meanwhile, will start at $529.
How to get the most out of this important purchase?
Which credit card should you use to protect your precious device or to simply earn more rewards points?
For mobile device insurance
To take advantage of the Mobile Device Insurance, your Apple device must be fully charged to your credit card account (or it can be financed through a plan where all monthly payments are charged to your credit card account). Otherwise, the insurance won’t be applicable in the event of an incident.
Also, make sure to keep the credit card used if there is a claim to be made. If your credit card account is closed, the insurance stops.
Many credit cards offer 2-year (from date of purchase), $1,000 Mobile Device Insurance:
Do you want a higher level of coverage?
Please note that the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card offers a 2-year,$1,500 Mobile Device Insurance policy.
Earn more points
To earn more points than usual, use our gift card trick. Take advantage of certain credit cards multiplying your points earned in grocery stores.
For example, with the Carte CobaltMD American ExpressCard, you earn 5X points on grocery store purchases. You can buy $500 in Apple gift cards at Metro or select IGA stores to pay for your new Apple Watch.
You will earn 2,500 Membership Rewards points (5 X $500). That’s a minimum reward value of $25.
If you purchase your devices directly from Apple, you would only earn 500 points, as the Carte CobaltMD American Express offers 1X points on “other purchases”.
Please note that a combination of Apple gift card payments and the rest of the payment charged to a credit card will void the warranty as well as the insurance. For peace of mind, purchase Apple Care+. This can also be paid for with gift cards.
Want to buy your new Apple device directly from Apple (or an electronics store like Best Buy or Staples) and earn more points? We have a solution: the American Express Business EdgeMD Card !
It’s one of the only credit cards in Canada to offer more points for this type of purchase: 3 points per dollar.
And right now, with this great welcome offer, you get 10 points per dollar on all purchases in the first 6 months (up to 10,000 points), including:
- Office supplies (Staples, etc.)
- Electronic devices (Apple, Dell, Microsoft, etc.)
- Purchases in restaurants, bars and bistros
So buying a new iPhone worth $1,500 could earn you 11,500 points! That’s a minimum reward value of $115. Not to mention that this purchase will help unlock the 45,000 point welcome bonus after $5,000 in purchases.
There is still time to take advantage of this welcome offer for the purchase of your Apple device:
Use a rewards site
Aeroplan eStore, Rakuten and Airmilesshops.ca give you the opportunity to earn rewards on your online purchases.
By going through these sites BEFORE you shop at Apple, you can earn cash back, Aeroplan points or AIR MILES miles.
However, make sure to check the exclusions. The newest models are often excluded, but sometimes you may still get the reward… It’s worth giving it a try.
Otherwise, you can always buy older models. They will most likely be on sale and will not be excluded from rewards, depending on the conditions.
To reach the minimum spend and get a welcome bonus
In order to get the biggest return on your Apple purchase, seize this opportunity to unlock a welcome bonus with a new credit card.
The total price of an iPhone 14 gets you almost halfway to the spending requirement to reap the 70,000 bonus Membership Rewards from the American Express® Gold Rewards Card. These valuable points are worth a minimum of $700 and can go up to $3,000 depending on how you use them and how much value you get out of them!
This card is just one of many examples of the great American Express summer offers that end in about ten days. This would be a great opportunity earn a lot of points for future trips.
Before purchasing a big expense like the new iPhone 14, there are several things to consider in order to choose the best credit card.
Of course, we want to collect as many points as possible, but we must also consider insurance and warranty.
It’s up to you to weigh the pros and cons of all the factors to determine what’s right for your situation.
