How to earn points and miles with Plastiq.com

To the point

Plastiq.com is an online service that allows you to pay all your bills with a credit card, either American Express, Mastercard, or Visa. Quite convenient for unlocking welcome bonuses or earning points & miles!

How to earn points and miles with Plastiq.com

Before going any further, we can confirm that this is a serious service recognized by the government. We have used it several times, and the Canada Revenue Agency lists it on its website as a service provider that offers credit card payment for taxes.

What payments are allowed on Plastiq?

As a private individual, you can pay for almost everything by credit card through Plastiq.com:

  • Mortgage or car payments (Mastercard only)
  • Rent
  • Taxes
  • Municipal and school taxes
  • Condo fees
  • School fees
  • Hydro Quebec
  • Professional services (accountants, lawyers…)
  • Professional associations (annual registration to an order for example…)

However, you cannot pay your credit cards balances through Plastiq or send cheques to yourself or your relatives (except for exchanges of services).

As a business or professional, you can pay vendors or suppliers, even your contractors!

The table of authorized providers by card type

On Plastiq, you’ll find a table in English which summarizes the credit or charge cards that can be used depending on the suppliers, both in Canada and in the United States!

At the end of this article, you’ll find the list of experienced suppliers validated by the members of the milesopedia Facebook group on this dedicated topic!

Plastiq.com service fees

Of course, this is not a miraculous service: there is a fee for every transaction made on Plastiq.com.

These fees depend:

  • on the card used: generally 2.85% (2.5% for CRA)
  • on the invoice paid

As you can see below, when paying the City of Montreal municipal taxes with a Mastercard, the fee is 2.25% (NB: this was a promotional period).

Whereas with an American Express or Visa card, these fees are 2.85%.

We remind you that the aim of this service is to keep you out of debt! Do not pay your taxes or other taxes with your credit card if you are unable to pay off your card balance. The interest accrued on your credit card will be much higher than the interest you could get by entering into a payment agreement with the Canada Revenue Agency or any other beneficiary!

Example of a payment to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

Here is step by step a payment to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) through Plastiq.

First, you will need to add the CRA as a beneficiary. You can search in this way (Plastiq is unfortunately only available in English). Canada Revenue Agency will be proposed to you.

plastiq beneficial addition
Search for a beneficiary

Then you check that it is correct and add the beneficiary to your list. You can see that payments to the CRA are made electronically within 3 days.

plastiq cra 3 days
Confirmation of the beneficiary

You are now ready to make your payment to the CRA. As the CRA is already recognized by Plastiq, you will be able to choose from answer fields (including the type of taxes you will pay). You decide on the date you want the payment to be received by the CRA (Plastiq automatically calculates the payment date for you):

plastiq cra config
First step in making a payment to the CRA

You will be asked for other details such as your SIN (which allows your payment to be issued to your account with the CRA) or the tax date.

Other payment details

Finally Plastiq will show you a summary before payment.

Final Summary

If you click on the fee (Total Fee), you can see that it is 2.5% for a payment with an American Express card .

If you got some “Fee-free Dollars / FFDs” you can apply them to your payment:

There you go! Your payment to the CRA is sent. You will be kept informed of tis progress by email. You will also be able to view it in the Plastiq management interface.

When to use the Plastiq.com service

In our opinion, it is advantageous to use the Plastiq.com service under 3 conditions.

The gain in points or miles must be worth it

However, few cards offer more than 2% return on your expenditure. In this case, the fee is usually 2.25-2.85%.

For example, you should use one of the cards in your wallet that offers 2% or more cash back on all your expenses. Or a card whose points provide a sufficient return like the one shown below.

To unlock a welcome bonus

Many cards offer generous welcome bonuses (including American Express), as long as you spend $XXX in 3 months.

In some cases, the amount to be spent can be as much as $5,000 for the American Express® Business Gold Rewards Card or even $7,000 for the American Express Business Platinum card! This is often not possible for many budgets.

In this case, it may be worthwhile to use the Plastiq.com service. The fee is worth it in this case, so you don’t lose the opportunity to earn thousands of points or miles!

As we have seen above, the fee remains minimal for cards that earn a lot of points/miles.

To earn the missing miles for a trip

Are you missing a few hundred or thousand miles for your next trip? Or a few points on your Marriott Bonvoy account? Plastiq.com can be a solution to your problem.

Rather than buying gift cards for different businesses, you could, for example, pay your electricity, municipal taxes, etc. in advance (the CRA even sends you back the overpayment by cheque a few months later…).

The best cards to use on Plastiq.com

There are 2 excellent cards to use for your payments on Plastiq:

The Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express card

The Marriott BonvoyMD Business American ExpressMD card allows you to earn between 2 and 3 Marriott Bonvoy points on Plastiq since mid-March 2019.

Some payments made on Plastiq are categorized… as a travel expense (earn 3 Marriott Bonvoy points).

plastiq bonvoy pme

Here’s an example of fees and points earned for a $1,000 spend on Plastiq.com with the Marriott BonvoyMD Business American ExpressMD that earns 3 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar.

Plastiq expenses + fees at 2.85%. Marriott Points Earned Value
1000 $ 3,000 points 27$
28,5$ 85 points 0,77$
1028.5$ 3,085 points 27,77$

Knowing that the conservative value of a Marriott Bonvoy point is 0.9 cents, the 3,085 Marriott Bonvoy points earned are worth $27.77.

But you could get a much higher value from Marriott Bonvoy points (like with the “fifth night free” technique).

It is therefore very interesting to be able to earn Marriott Bonvoy points through Plastiq thanks to the Marriott BonvoyMD Business American ExpressMD card.

The American Express® Business Gold Rewards Card

The American Express® Business Gold Rewards Card earns you 1 point/dollar on all purchases. But you can choose 3 suppliers from which you will earn 2 points / dollar spent… and Plastiq.com is part of the list of suppliers!

You will find the list of available suppliers on this page. There are Petro-Canada and Best Buy, for example.

amex or pme suppliers
The list of suppliers

So for all bills paid on Plastiq.com, you will earn 2 points / dollar. Remember that American Express Membership Rewards points can be transferred to many programs such as Aeroplan.

And using Plastiq.com is a great way to reach the welcome bonus threshold on this card which is $5,000 in 3 months.

Here’s an example of fees and points earned for a $1,000 Plastiq.com spend with an American Express car that earns 2 points per dollar, transferred into Aeroplan Miles.

Plastiq expenses + fees at 2.85%. Points Earned Value Aeroplan Miles
1000 $ 2,000 points $20 2 000
28.5$ 57 points 0,57$ 57
1028.5$ 2057 points 20,57$ 2057

Knowing that the conservative value of an Aeroplan Mile is 1.7 cents, the 2,057 miles earned are worth $35.

This gives you a significant advantage over the fee charged by Plastiq.com (as long as you use your Aeroplan Miles afterwards!).

Conclusion

Plastiq is therefore a convenient service for you to unlock welcome bonuses and earn points and miles for payments you make by cheque or through your bank account!

We remind you: it is not recommended to use this service if you are unable to pay off your credit card balance! The interest that will apply on this one (16 to 30%!!) far exceeds the rewards you could have obtained!

How to pay a transfer tax with a credit card

The first thing to do is to check if your city accepts credit card payments. Some do. Otherwise, there is the possibility of dealing through a third party such as PLASTIQ or PAYSIMPLY which will accept your payment by credit card and send the amount by check or wire transfer to the recipient.

However, since there is a fee for this service, Milesopedia recommends using this strategy to unlock the bonus on a new credit card.
