Best Price Guarantee: another way to save

To the point Aside from points and miles... there's another way to save on everyday purchases: the merchant's best price guarantee.

Best Price Guarantee: another way to save

I’ve already told you about the best price guarantee for your hotel nights.

In this post, we will see the different policies applied in the shops… but also by the issuers of some credit cards!

Indeed, this is an advantage that is not necessarily highlighted… but some cards offer you the best price guarantee!

Best price guarantee policies in Canada

In order to facilitate the reading of the information and the comparison between the various businesses, I have grouped all this in the form of tables by category of business.

Definition :

  • Match or beat: businesses can either match or beat their competitor’s proposed price in several ways:
    1. Percentage of the price difference between the two prices
    2. Additional percentage discount on the best price
  • Duration: period of time from the time of your purchase to claim the best price guarantee
  • Online: the warranty applies to items that can be purchased online from the competitor
  • In-store: the warranty applies to items that can be purchased in-store from the competitor
  • To get this: does the store allow for in-store warranty, online warranty or both.

You can click on the business name to go to the Best Price Guarantee conditions.

Appliances and furniture

Merchant Equals or beats Duration Online In Store Where to get this?
Best Buy Equals 30 days Yes Yes In store
Brick Refund the difference according to the item 30 days Yes Yes In store
Dormez-vous 5% (1) Yes In store
Leon’s Refund the difference 60 days Yes Yes In store

The guarantees of the best price are here are different for everyone. It is important to read the terms and conditions of each store, as they may change at any time.

Electronics and office furniture

Merchant Equals or beats Duration Online In Store Where to get this?
Staples Yes 14-30 days Yes Yes In store
Computers Canada Yes, 10%. 15 days Yes Yes Both
The Source Yes 30 days Yes Yes In store and on the phone

Please read the terms and conditions of each policy carefully, as there are many terms and conditions that change without notice.

Personally, I have dealt with Memory Express many times.

Not only for their best price guarantee with 10% of the difference refunded… but especially because they don’t charge QST on the products sold.

That is an additional saving of almost 10%!

Materials and construction

Merchant Equals or beats Duration Online In Store Where to get this?
Home Depot 10% 30 days Yes In store
Home Hardware Yes 30 days Yes In store
Rona Matches and 10% for household appliances 30 days Yes In store
Reno Depot Matches and 10% for household appliances 30 days Yes In store

Here, the best price guarantees are even more interesting for some businesses that offer up to 10% off the competitor’s lowest price (not just the difference).

home depot best price

So, it can be very interesting, especially for large purchases such as household appliances, to use the competition!

I have a friend – he will recognize himself 😉 – who has become an expert in this field: he has managed to save several thousand dollars on his appliance purchases thanks to the best price guarantee!

He had to go back and forth between Home Depot, Best Buy and Brick, but it was worth it for the money saved!

Credit card price protection

There are very few credit cards that offer a Price Protection Service. Some MasterCard credit cards – including the MBNA Rewards World EliteMD MastercardMD Card

Price Protection Service
If you purchase an eligible item with your Card and find the same product advertised at a lower price in Canada within 60 days of purchase, you will be reimbursed for the difference up to $500 per item, subject to a maximum of $1,000 per calendar year per Account.

Check with your issuer to see if your card offers this “price protection”.
