In July 2021, the Hilton Honors loyalty program changed the rules for its hotels in the United States. As of this time, complimentary breakfasts have been removed for Hilton Honors Gold and Diamond members.
To compensate, they have been replaced by a daily food and beverage credit until the end of 2021. It can be used to deduct the bill for a meal, for a drink at the bar or a meal ordered in the room, among others.
This is valid for the following hotels:
Credit varies and depends on hotel brand:
The hotel chain just confirmed today that this rule will continue for all of 2022, with one minor change.
For some cities where living costs are higher, this credit barely covered the bill. So Hilton announced today that it was adding an additional credit for these cities:
Effective February 1, 2022, the daily rate will be $18 per day (or $36 per day if there are two or more people in the member’s room). This is an increase of $3 per person, per day.
For the rest of the other Hilton brands where breakfast was already included, there is no change.

This credit can be perfect for people who do not eat breakfast in the morning. In fact, they can put that credit towards another meal during their stay. The same was true for those who had breakfast paid for by their employer or included in a package.
However, this is bad news for a group of three or more people, for example. This credit does not cover all the costs of a family breakfast, especially when there are growing children for example!
On the other hand, for people who are thinking of accumulating credits during a stay of several nights or transferring the unused amounts to the next night: it does not work.
In Canada, you can get Hilton Honors Gold Elite status with the Platinum Card®. This is one of the many advantages: airport lounge access, travel credit, Elite status, transferable points, etc.
With Hilton Honors Gold status, you get complimentary breakfast at Hilton hotels worldwide (and daily food and beverage credit at Hilton hotels in the US).
This is an interesting advantage, especially for families.
Initially, this change was only temporary. We now realize that this is shaping up to be a bit more permanent than expected.
Hopefully this Hilton credit policy is limited to the US only.
